UPDATED: Lynnfield Schools, Town Hall Closed On Monday

Weather from Hurricane Sandy expected to affect region until at least the early morning hours of Tuesday. Today's trash collection put off until further notice.

This was updated at 10:26 a.m. The Lynnfield School District joined other surrounding towns late Sunday afternoon in cancelling Monday's classes. Nearby districts such as Wakefield, North Reading and Peabody also announced cancellations in light of Hurricane Sandy's expected effects on the region. A separate announcement from the town said that town hall is closed, and trash collection is delayed for at least Monday. Information will be posted online after the storm about when trash collection will resume. Finnish Lessons

Thanks to Lynnfield School Superintendent Dr. Thomas Jefferson for providing this commentary piece to local media about his recent visit to observe schools in Finland and Sweden.

The following was provided to Lynnfield's local media by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Jefferson:  Finnish Lessons November 2012 As you may be aware, in recent years the global community has begun to pay a great deal of attention to public schools in Finland.  For the last decade that country has ranked at the top of international comparisons on measures such as the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). What is unique about Finland’s success is that they have done this in a country that does little standardized testing, appears to have significantly less homework than most Asian or high achieving American districts, and pays little attention to the ranking of schools or the evaluation of teachers.  Last month I had …

Community Gardens Offer New Learning Opportunities In Lynnfield

Eight community gardens currently located at LHS and the two elementary schools with help from Lynnfield Educational Trust donation.

The following was provided by LHS Science Dept. Chair Scott Gordon and the Lynnfield Educational Trust: The majority of the funding for the community gardens in the Lynnfield Public Schools came through a generous donation from the Lynnfield Educational Trust (LET). Gardens are all identical 4x8 raised beds.  There are 8 gardens at the high school and one at each of the elementary schools.  We are planning to build one at the middles school as well.  Gardens were build using sheet mulching (layered gardening) and students and teachers alike helped layer the gardens with cardboard, newspaper, peat moss, compost, dirt, and leaves which combine to create beautiful soil while also diverting useful materials from the waste stream.  Stephanie …

MCAS Scores Offered Some Mixed Results In Lynnfield

Challenges remain for some grades in math, other categories had district near the top of the state.

Lynnfield students generally built on last year’s accomplishments in the statewide MCAS test, with scores having been released by the state this week. This link offers a look at how the Lynnfield students have fared in MCAS testing over the past several years, broken down by grade, year and subject. A significant number of grade 10 students were able to move into the advanced category in math and English, and to a lesser extent, science. The “needs improvement” category for all of these subjects remained largely unchanged and in the single digits. In grade 8 mathematics, which can also be viewed at the above link, the total number of students in the advanced or proficient categories rose to 70% from 61% last year. This year there were 19% …

Lynnfield Public Schools reopen on Wednesday, August 29 for grades 1-12.

The following is an announcement from the Lynnfield School District: Dr. Thomas W.
