POLL: Which Classic Lynnfield Restaurant Would You Resurrect?

The Ship, which has existed in various forms since the 1930s or earlier, is set to reopen its doors later this year. So that invites the question - what other Lynnfield landmark restaurant would you bring back if you could?

As noted in this article earlier today on Lynnfield Patch, The Ship is set to re-open its doors about a year after its previous managers closed the place down. So with that in mind, this is a good opportunity to run a poll and ask some locals - if you could bring back one classic Lynnfield restaurant that is no longer with us, which would it be? And if I forgot to add one in the poll below or if you have something else to add, just make a note of it in the comment box below.

Thanks for the info on Sam, Julia. I met him once at a party many years ago and thought what a nice guy he is. Alas, I was involved with someone else at the time, lol! If the accident you are talking about was the one where three boys died, I believe it was up further east on Salem St...sort of across from Brook Drive. I enjoy listening in on your and Ernie's reminiscing. You know, I think all of…   more ›

Just Curious: Are You Still Following The Red Sox This Year?

It's a Friday late in the dog days of summer - a good time to ask this baseball question I've been wondering about recently.

When it comes to Boston-area sports, Lynnfield has the distinction of having been home to numerous athletes over the years, particularly some popular members of the Bruins and the Red Sox. However, it's been a long, long time since Carl Yastrzemski allegedly re-sodded his front lawn in Lynnfield with turf from Fenway's outfield - and those glorious days of 2004 and 2007 are starting to feel almost as remote as the long-ago "Impossible Dream" team. So here's the deal. This isn't Florida Marlins country. A lot of us on the North Shore have Red Sox roots that go back three or four generations. I'm told that my grandfather used to be up on a ladder working on his house in Salem back in the 1950s and he'd be yelling at the game as it played on …

POLL: The Most Dangerous Speeding Spots In Lynnfield?

This week's poll questions asks locals - which street is the most dangerous when it comes to speeding drivers?

Speeding has long been a top public safety concern in Lynnfield. In recent months, police have stepped up their traffic enforcement activities, and many readers on this website have also weighed in on the issue. Months ago, a past poll asked about the most dangerous intersections in town. This week, let's look at a different angle - which of these heavily traveled Lynnfield streets is most dangerous when it comes to speeding cars? And is there a street that you think should be mentioned? Just say so in the comments box below!

SLOW DOWN on Chestnut! There are children here -- that ball that rolls into the street will be chased and at thirty mph you may have time to stop and prevent killing a child.   more ›

POLL: Should Massachusetts Legalize Fireworks?

This is one of only four states to ban fireworks sales. Do you think it's time to change that, or not?

This week, some area media outlets have noted that Massachusetts is now just one of four states to ban the sale of fireworks - and one state rep. has reportedly even filed a bill to lift that ban rather than having people simply drive out of state to make their purchases. Fireworks noise complaints are a pretty common entry in the police log this time of year, but many other people wouldn't consider it a July 4th without having a few to shoot off themselves. And heck, you can't even get the really, really good stuff unless you're up for a drive to South Carolina or some place like that. But I digress. With that - what do you think? Should Massachusetts legalize fireworks sales or keep things the way they are? Feel free to comment in the …

OK- I'm about as Libertarian as they get but, knowing how stupid the average American is and, my neighbors carelessness when you fire them off illegally having them land on peoples roofs, I would ask that we consider a) legalizing them, b) requiring a simple, no fee, permit which you get by passing a basic oral exam (or quiz) by the fire department and c) if you are going to fire off large …   more ›

POLL: Do You Think There's A Ghost In The Meeting House?

In a couple of weeks, a group of paranormal investigators will report on what, if anything, they found Saturday night at Lynnfield's Old Meeting House. But why wait? Let's hear what you think!

Over the weekend, a team of paranormal investigators visited Lynnfield's 1714 Old Meeting House, and a full account of their visit - as well as an interesting historical detail or two - can be found by checking out today's article and photo gallery from the evening at this link. For example, it turns out that on Sunday, May 4, 1777, the Reverend Benjamin Adams, a Lynnfield father of seven, actually died in his pulplit in the Old Meeting House - presumably mid-sermon. In general, the Old Meeting House has played a crucial role in the town's history and character over the past three centuries. If there is going to be a ghost in Lynnfield, this place is an excellent candidate for it. So what do you think - are there ghosts in the Meeting …

You know, honestly I was there until 2 am with those folks and even the cemetery across the street did not feel scary or haunted at all. However, there were one or two places in the Meeting House, especially this little machine room across from the kitchen, that seemed to feel different somehow.   more ›

POLL: What Do You Think Of The Fat Cactus Wetlands Situation?

Weigh in on this longstanding issue that has been in the local news on and off for going on two years now.

Yesterday on the Lynnfield Patch Facebook page, I said that I would run a poll today asking local residents where they stand on this ongoing impasse with the Lynnfield Conservation Commission and The Fat Cactus. Basically, the situation revolves around a gravel parking area behind the Fat Cactus that was found to violate wetland regulations but which over the course of many months has apparently not been fixed. This week, the conservation commission even voted to reissue its criminal complaint against the restaurant after it failed to send somebody with decision-making authority to the meeting as requested. This article from earlier in the week provides some more background information on the matter. That said - where do you stand on this …

The EPA is by far one of the biggest jokes in Massachusetts. The fat cactus gets hammered for making a parking lot in the middle of a wetland, however, half of lynnfield got torn apart when they expanded the town north and south including Ramsdell way. Its not going to really matter anyhow, let them expand. We need better bars like the fat cactus around. Wetlands are terrible anyway. Its not like…   more ›

POLL: Does Lynnfield Need A Movie Theater?

From time to time, Lynnfield Patch asks readers to weigh in on various questions and quality of life issues about town.

In this latest poll question - A couple of major projects, Market Street at Lynnfield and the proposed athletic fields complex, are set to start up in town over the next several years. Back during the early days of planning the Market Street project, this idea was apparently raised but then not pursued. That said, a number of high profile restaurants and one large arcade/entertainment complex are coming to that site anyhow. With some changes set to come to town in the coming years, here's a question that's a bit older than this website - should there be a movie theater in Lynnfield?

POLL: Volunteer Shortage In Lynnfield

From time to time, Lynnfield Patch invites readers to weigh in on an issue affecting the community. Vote in the poll or leave a comment in the boxes below!

In an article that ran today, Lynnfield Patch spoke with Linda Rugato of the Lynnfield Athletic Association about the organization's critical lack of volunteers. However, this is just one town organization currently struggling to maintain a strong future in the face of what is essentially a town-wide shortage of volunteers. With that, register your opinion in this week's poll question!
