PHOTOS: Changing Seasons in Reedy Meadow

Part of an ongoing series of outdoor photo galleries highlighting open spaces in Lynnfield.

Winter has all but vanished from the area, and there's already some early signs of spring starting to appear. A walk through Reedy Meadow in Lynnfield found the same thing - the landscape still looks like winter, there's colder weather in the forecast, and the water levels are pretty high right now - but, it's equally obvious that spring is merely days away.

Then And Now

Then and Now: Long-Ago Lynnfield Photography

This week - a 119-year old photo from Bow Ridge Reservation.

Anybody who's done some hiking up in the Bow Ridge Reservation of Lynnfield is familiar with the large boulders that dot the landscape, and which can be spotted at times from Route 1 looking up toward the power lines. This particular image is a "Magic Lantern" glass slide, dated 1894. The Magic Lantern was a slide projection device that has a fairly interesting Wikipedia page. Several people in the 119-year old image stand around one of the glacial erratics that have been there since the last ice age ended. That year there was apparently snow on the ground by December 1st. In September of 2011, I actually ran a look at some of these boulders on the website as well, since Bow Ridge is somewhat comparable to the Agassiz Rock site located …

Photo Of The Day

PHOTO: Guests at Pillings Pond

Thanks to Jenna Zanni for sending in her photo of two baby deer stopping by her yard.

Lynnfield has a fair amount of wildlife if you know where to look - but sometimes, you don't need to even leave the house to spot it. Lynnfield resident Jenna Zanni photographed these two young deer in her yard as they stopped by to snack on some holly.

Kerry Goodwin Photographs The Danforth House

Lynnfield-based professional photographer Kerry Goodwin had a series of photos run last year in the Weekly News. She's got a gallery of more than 200 shots up on Flickr showing the town's most historic house.

Earlier in the week, this website ran an update on the discussion over what to do with Lynnfield's Danforth House. The building is as decayed as it is historic, having played key roles in some of the most formative moments of Lynnfield's history. These days, it is probably best known as the former home of Captain Nathaniel Bancroft, who led one of several groups of Lynnfield Minutemen to fight the British at the Battle of Menotomy in Arlington soon after Lexington and Concord in April, 1775. The building was last used as a nursing home around the 1950s. Whether or not it is saved, it's possible that the land could in the future be used for a new town public safety complex or library. Thanks to Lynnfield photographer Kerry Goodwin for …

Check This Out: Photography At The Ninety-Nine

New decor at the Lynnfield Ninety-Nine on Salem Street includes photos from Lynnfield Patch.

The Lynnfield Ninety-Nine is sporting some new decor, and some of it includes photos that have run on Lynnfield Patch over the past year or two. A couple of months ago, this website heard from a photography business working with the restaurant to add some new and local images. Many of the images feature athletes and sporting events from LHS, so check them out next time you're in there. Originally there was some talk of using some of the countless outdoor shots from myself, Suzy Julian and Doug Conrood, among others that can be found on this website. Photography is serious business on Lynnfield Patch and it's great that some of these images have been used in the decor of such a popular local restaurant. I've been doing it for 20 years now, …

PHOTOS: A Glimpse Of The Saugus River

Part of an ongoing series of photos featuring the open spaces of Lynnfield.

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned the Saugus River portion of Lynnfield, not far from Reedy Meadow and Wakefield. It's a part of town that few ever really take a look at because much of the river runs through either private or state land. This view of the river comes from Main Street near Indian Lane.

Photo Of The Day

PHOTO: Early Winter Day In Reedy Meadow

From time to time, this website runs photos highlighting the open spaces of Lynnfield.

The last couple of winters have been tough from a photography perspective. The New England landscape just calls out for some snow this time of year. But with no snow on the horizon, I'm reminded of one of the earliest outdoor photo galleries to run on this website, from that (briefly) epic winter of 2010-2011. With temperatures expected to rise into the 40s in the coming days, I'm not sure when I'll get to throw the term "Terra Arctica" around again like that. This particular image for today was shot from the boardwalk of Reedy Meadow last week and was not included in a similar gallery that ran at the time. Just for the heck of it, I threw in a second one as well. If and when we get a little more snow this winter, the next stop will be the…
