Lighthouse Historian Speaks Tuesday Night

Jeremy D'Entremont has written several books, several hundred articles, and appeared on numerous TV shows talking about lighthouses of New England.

Author Jeremy D’Entremont will be the featured speaker at the next Lynnfield Historical Society meeting on Tuesday, May 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Old Meeting House. D’Entremont’s work focuses on lighthouses and their keepers – and his lecture in Lynnfield will include two local lost lighthouses – the 1897 Egg Rock Lighthouse and the Ipswich Range Lights. Along with writing some 300 articles plus his books on the topic, D’Entremont has appeared on numerous television shows to talk about lighthouse history. He offers tours in Portsmouth, NH and his website is at www.lighthouse.cc.

Author Roger Kolb Speaks at Historical Society Meeting Tonight

Kolb, owner of New England Armchair Tours, will give talk on great New England musicians.

Thanks to Ruth McMahon of the Lynnfield Historical Society for this information: The next meeting of the Lynnfield Historical Society will take place Tuesday at 7:30 pm in the 1714 Meeting House.  The meeting will feature a slide lecture entitled “Orpheus Among the Yankees:  New England’s Great Musicians”. Lynnfield Getting Ready for 2014 Bicentennial Celebration

Next year, Lynnfield celebrates its 200th birthday. The historical commission and other town entities are getting ready to mark the occasion. Volunteers are needed to lend a hand.

Thanks to Steve Smith of the Lynnfield Historical Commission for providing this information: While the town of Lynnfield was founded in 1814, it’s interesting to note that the Old Meeting House was built in 1714 and will celebrate its tricentennial.  “So we’ll have multiple reasons to celebrate in 2014” said Nan Hockenbury, chair of the Lynnfield Historical Commission. Back in the time when the Meeting House was built, in the pre-Revolutionary era, the area we now know as Lynnfield was part of Lynn, and called Lynn End.  This was where Puritans gathered to worship.  Thomas Wellman’s  A History of Lynnfield is an excellent source for early history of settlers North of Boston who explored the areas in what we now call “North Shore” …

Author Discusses1942 Cocoanut Grove Fire Tonight

Lynnfield Historical Society welcomes Stephanie Schorow, tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Old Meeting House.

The following was provided by Ruth McMahon of the Lynnfield Historical Society: The Lynnfield Historical Society will present a program titled “The Cocoanut Grove Fire” at its upcoming meeting, on Tuesday, February 19.  Its guest speaker will be Stephanie Schorow, a journalist and author. Schorow, an experienced journalist and Boston transplant, was for many years the lifestyles editor for the Boston Herald.  She has taught writing for the adult education division of Emerson College and for the Cambridge Center for Adult Education.   She is the author of six books, including “Boston on Fire:  A History of Fires and Firefighting in Boston” and “The Cocoanut Grove Fire”.  She also serves as the Vice President of the Board of the Boston Fire …

PHOTOS: 50 Years Of Lynnfield's Country Store

On Saturday, the Lynnfield Historical Society holds the 50th annual Country Store event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Check out these photos taken over the decades at past events.

On Saturday before the town's tree lighting, the Lynnfield Historical Society will host the 50th annual Country Store event. Each year, fundraising event offers local residents a chance to get a jump on some holiday shopping with locally made items, in an old-fashioned country Christmas setting. To mark the occasion, Steve Richard of the historical society sent in these photos taken at various Country Store events over the years. Richard reported that the Country Store event started at the Old Meeting House in 1962, around the time the historic structure was renovated once it was no longer used as the town fire station. Historical Society Seeking Twinkies To Raffle Off At Fundraiser

The Historical Society celebrates its 50th anniversay at the Country Store event on Dec. 1. And they hope to be able to raffle off a pack of Twinkies.

The following is an announcement from the Lynnfield Historical Society: One UNOPENED pack of TWINKIES  sought as a donation for  LYNNFIELD OLD MEETING HOUSE COUNTRY STORE FUNDRAISER on Dec 1. The Lynnfield Historical Society wants to celebrate its 50th Anniversary by raffling off a pack of Twinkies as part of its Country Store fundraiser on Dec 1 (this is the group's only fundraiser and it is used to support the preservation of Lynnfield's Old Meeting House). 50th Annual Country Store Event Is On Dec. 1

On Saturday, Dec. 1 the Lynnfield Historical Society holds its 50th annual Country Store event.

The following is an announcement from the Lynnfield Historical Society:  On Saturday, December 1st, in the 1714 Meeting House, the Lynnfield Historical Society is presenting its 50th annual holiday Country Store. This year’s country store will feature the traditional favorites as well as some new attractions and extended hours.  The Store will open at 9 a.m.  On sale will be traditional holiday greens in the form of small, medium and large wreaths and swags; boxwood trees; Vermont cheddar cheese; ham, beans and brown bread dinner to go; a variety of home-made baked goods; penny candy; freshly popped popcorn; and homemade jams.  The kitchen will also be open selling and serving coffee, cider, donuts, hot dogs and sandwiches. Author/Historian To Discuss American Christmas Traditions

Anthony Sammarco speaks Tuesday at Lynnfield Historical Society meeting on how Americans have celebrated Christmas over the years.

The following is an announcement from the Lynnfield Historical Society: The Lynnfield Historical Society will present a program titled "Christmas Traditions” at its upcoming meeting, on Tuesday, November 20.  Its guest speaker will be Anthony Sammarco, the noted local historian and author.
