Thanks to the Lynnfield Fire Department for providing some photos from a training exercise held over the weekend at Pillings Pond.

Over the weekend, a reader noted that the Lynnfield Fire Department had been out at Pillings Pond Saturday morning with some equipment. A quick email to the Chief Joseph Lingel found that nobody was ever in any danger - it turned out that department members were doing an ice rescue drill. According to Chief Lingel, personnel use equipment such as an inflatable boat, an ice rescue sled, ice rescue suits and the fire department tower to simulate the rescue of a person who's fallen through the ice. Training on this equipment reportedly takes place each year.

Town Repeals $100 EMS Assessment Fee

In letter to selectmen, Fire Chief Joseph Lingel said fee had "created a lot of negative feelings in our community."

Individuals who receive an assessment from EMS personnel will no longer have to pay a $100 fee to the town, following a vote this week by the board of selectmen. At Monday’s meeting at town hall, Selectmen Bob MacKendrick and Dave Nelson voted in favor of the proposal, which was raised in a letter the week before by Fire Chief Joseph Lingel. The town's third selectman seat, held by Al Merritt until the beginning of January, will remain vacant until the April town election. Lingel’s letter, which was read aloud at the meeting, noted that the $100 fee “has created a lot of negative feelings in our community.” Selectmen largely concurred with the two main points Lingel raised in supporting the fee’s removal. First, a number of residents have …
