Preliminary Town Budget Has $42K Surplus

Considerable savings to be realized in coming fiscal year on health insurance and other items, allowing a small town surplus. Links are included to previous articles on the town budget process.

Town officials are weighing a 2.9% budget increase for the town as they head into the new fiscal year. At a selectmen's meeting earlier this week, Town Administrator Bill Gustus delivered a presentation on the various budget items that Lynnfield residents will consider at the April town meeting. Overall, the preliminary FY '13 budget calls for $43,025,890.36 in total expenditures, on $43,068,313.79 in revenues. This would amount to a surplus of $42,423.42 for the town - a pleasant contrast to the Prop. 2 1/2 override and layoff worries that characterized the process last spring. School Officials Seek 4.5% Increase For FY13

District revised budget request down from 4.9% between Monday and Tuesday.

Lynnfield School District officials started the week requesting a 4.9% budget increase for FY13 during their presentation at this week's selectmen's meeting. However, on advice from Town Administrator Bill Gustus, that request was modified down to 4.5% by Tuesday night's school committee meeting. During Monday's presentation, Superintendent Thomas W. Jefferson noted that the district faces several challenges this year, including the loss of a $191,000 federal jobs grant, in-district services for students with special needs, and a  required 3% cost of living increase for the third and final year of the current contract. Don't the schools realize we are still in the recovery process from the recession. I would think they are entitled to a modest 2% budget increase.   more ›
