VIDEO: Making Chocolate Pretzel Fudge for Valentine's Day

On Wednesday, Tabatha Brennan, dining services coordinator at Sunrise Senior Living, visited the Lynnfield Senior Center for a Valentine's Day dessert demonstration.

Tabatha Brennan, the dining services coordinator for Sunrise Senior Living in Lynnfield, returned to the Lynnfield Senior Center on Wednesday to give a demonstration on making Valentine's Day desserts. In this video, Tabatha is making pretzel chocolate fudge with caramel sauce. The pretzels are crushed and mixed with melted butter and then spread on the bottom of the (buttered) pan before the fudge is poured in. From there, the pan goes into the fridge for 90 minutes or so. Other options for the fudge include caramel sauce on top - or even in the middle between the pretzels and the chocolate. The demonstration also included tuxedo strawberries with white and regular chocolate, and oreo cupcakes. Also, check out this video from last year …

While Memorial Day is this Monday, May also happens to be National Military Appreciation Month. The Sunrise facility, located on Salem Street, currently has at least 18 residents who served in the armed forces during the World War II and Korea eras. Sunrise staff member Leonard Sargeant was also honored for his 21 years of service in the Navy, from 1980 to 2001. PHOTOS: Local Art Displayed At Sunrise

Sunrise Senior Living held an art and design event featuring the work of Lynnfield Art Guild members and others, as well as tips on decorating a room with the comfort and safety of seniors in mind.

On Sunday and Monday of this week, Sunrise Assisted Living on Salem Street provided local artists with a forum to display some of their creations. These photos show artworks primarily created by Lynnfield residents, most of them members of the Lynnfield Art Guild. Work by Sunrise resident and longtime North Shore artist Angelo Stavru was also on display and for sale. Stavru, whose art show at Sunrise was featured on this website earlier in the winter, is a Navy veteran who didn't let an MS diagnosis decades ago stop him from becoming an accomplished artist. The steady stream of community members who stopped by during the two-day display also received a home design guide for seniors and their families featuring tips from Emily Henderson of …

PHOTOS: The Artwork Of Angelo Stavru

Retired artist and Navy veteran had exhibit Sunday at Sunrise Senior Living.

This Sunday at Sunrise Senior Living in Lynnfield, community members had the opportunity to check out some paintings by longtime professional artist Angelo Stavru, who is currently a resident there. Stavru, 74, was joined at the exhibit by family members and senior staff members at Sunrise, and a classical pianist was even on hand to provide a musical background.  A native of Lynn, Stavru served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1954 soon after his discharge. During his time in the service, he was an engine room worker on naval vessels. Later, as his MS became more pronounced, he switched to watercolors because this medium was more compatible to work with. He studied at the Vesper George …

Town Resident Celebrates 100th Birthday

Clara Gerke grew up in Bavaria, Germany and arrived in New York City in 1928.

Last week, Sunrise Senior Living in Lynnfield held a 100th birthday party for a resident whose story begins in Bavaria, Germany, several years before World War I. Clara Gerke grew up in a family with two brothers and seven sisters, in an era that historians most usually associate with the runaway inflation that devastated the German economy and led to a barter system in many areas. At last week's birthday party, two of Gerke's sons, Robert and Raymond, were on hand, along with several other family members. Raymond told the gathering of friends, family and staff members about his mother's life - Originally, another sister, Matilde, was supposed to board a ship to America back in 1928. Instead, she decided not to, and 16-year-old sister …

Meet Dorothy Lyons, Pearl Harbor Veteran

Resident at Sunrise Senior Living in Lynnfield treated wounded men during attack of Dec. 7, 1941.

Americans everywhere marked the 70th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack this week - and at least one Lynnfield resident is among the dwindling few who were actually there that day. Dorothy (Munn) Lyons, a resident at Sunrise Senior Living in Lynnfield, was a nurse stationed at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, when the Japanese struck in a surprise attack that brought the U.S. into World War II. Lyons had already served in several locations for the Navy by the time of the attack, including in Brooklyn, Quantico, and in California. Dorothy went to the Carney nursing school in South Boston and lived in Medford for many years. Her husband, John Murray Lyons, was also a Navy man from Medford - the two met during their high school years. In …
