Utility that serves much of Lynnfield reports it's "well prepared" for blizzard, cites likelihood of less tree debris for this storm.
With two or three feet of snow in the forecast this weekend, there’s an excellent chance of power outages throughout the area. Looking ahead to the start of the storm, Reading Municipal Light Department reported Thursday that it is “well prepared” for the expected blizzard – and that despite the daunting forecast, damage will likely be less than what was seen in Hurricane Sandy. “Hurricane Sandy and other windstorms during the month of January shook loose limbs off the trees and compromised electrical connections have been repaired. We do not expect as much tree debris from this storm,” said RMLD Interim General Manager Kevin Sullivan in a statement. Sullivan reported that RMLD will have staff working overnight Friday, with personnel …

To the editor, I would like to express my appreciation for the communication job done by Reading Municipal Light Department during the recent storm. I found their website informative and, most importantly, courteous informed staff responded to my inquiries even at 4:00 in the morning when I needed to confirm that all the schools had power in order to make a decision on holding school. In ten years as a superintendent in several different communities I’ve never previously had that level of response or communication from a utility provider. Sincerely, Thomas W. Jefferson, Ed.D. Friday, RMLD apologized for using a 1924 image from a minstrel show in North Reading. Several months ago, Lynnfield Patch came across a 1942 page 1 newspaper account of a minstrel show at the old Lynnfield Town Hall.
As many area residents know, Reading Municipal Light produces a popular calendar every year that shows vintage photos from across its service area, which includes much of Lynnfield. On Friday, the utility company issued an apology for its September image, which shows a "minstrel show" that took place in 1924 where some of the men were in blackface. "RMLD apologizes to its customers and other individuals who have been offended by this culturally insensitive portrayal," said the company's statement. "This is not a message RMLD supports. RMLD strongly encourages and is committed to diversity and inclusion." The utility also indicated that it will "reinforce and enhance its internal training related to diversity in the workplace and will …
