Venture Out: Gloucester

Revisit your younger days when you hopped in the car, started the engine and drove off in search of something fun. The Sunday Patch Passport maps out where you can go on a short drive from your home. You won’t want to miss these unique stops on our trip.

Just a short drive north along the coast, Gloucester is a small fishing town brimming with beautiful views.  A good place to begin your adventures is the visitor's center. Volunteers there can point you in the right direction.  According to volunteer Rosie Sagall, one of the most popular activities is whale-watching. She said they guarantee you will see whales on your expedition.  Want to relax by the water? Check out Pavilion Beach. According to locals, it's the only beach with free parking.  "It's quiet and peaceful," said Winifred White, a Gloucester resident for 63 years.  White makes her way to the beach every day. "It doesn't get any better than this," she said.  A relaxing day on the beach usually makes a person hungry.  You're in a…

Discover Treasures: All About Consignment

The Patch Passport shows you where you can find trinkets in your town. Get out and explore the unique local shops and all they have to offer.

In this tough economy, consignment shops may be the way to go. Rose Gallagher, 66, of Reading, and her husband, Ed, 79, have been the "retired" shop owners of All About Consignment since April 2009, which was previously vacant. All About Consignment, at 480 Broadway, sells women's casual, dress, and evening-wear and accessories, including jewelry, shoes, handbags -- all at a discounted price, especially for name brands. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. "Items have to be clean and wearable from a non-smoking home. If they sell within 60 days, or a month after that, the donor will get 50 percent of the profits," Gallagher said. As far as the pricing, a scale method works. Used items are sold at one-third of the …

A Little Bit Of Paradise: Venezia Day Spa

Take advantage of free time; get out and enjoy these hot spots.Your Patch Passport gives you options for great local spot's beauty treatments.

Gayle Venezia, of Danvers, owner of Venezia Day Spa, believes that when stressed, facials and similar beauty treatments are the best thing people can do for themselves. "I say meditate, not medicate, and hugs, not drugs," she said, with a laugh. Her business offers a discount for customers who get serviced once a month. For example, a massage would normally cost $60, but for customers who come in monthly, it's $50. Likewise, manicures and pedicures are $40, but cost $30 for regulars. Since most people get pedis once a month during the summer, Venezia explained, a simplified toe pedicure, or a pushing back of nail cuticles and a nail polish change, only costs $10, adding that her prices are reasonable during this tough economy. From June …

I went in for a massage. The massage was great but I could not relax due to the noise level. As you walk in to the "spa" the waiting room is joined with the nail salon. The smell of the polish and owner's loud voice carriers through the place. I did not complain. The massge was only $60 and I was told if I come in once a month they would charge $50. I would not go back even though the massage was…   more ›

Travel Back In Time: Old Meeting House

Travel Back in Time with the Wednesday Patch Passport, to discover the history and roots of Lynnfield.

Throughout Lynnfield there are many old Colonial homes, as well as cemeteries that date back to the town’s early history. However, one of the best places to visit for history buffs passing through town is the Old Meeting House, located at the Lynnfield Common, across from the library. The meeting house was built in 1714, and is generally believed to be the third oldest Puritan meeting house in the state that is still standing on the original land. Since that time it has served the Lynnfield community in religious, political, and social capacities. Originally the meeting house was built in a square shape with three doors. In 1832 a dissension over the religious doctrine caused some members to leave and found a new church. Faced with …

Hidden Gem: Karen's Bakery and Skull Rock

Discover a Hidden Gem in Lynnfield that you may have driven by and never known it existed. Or maybe you have not visited this interesting spot in years. So take a little trip with Patch...we’ll show you the way.

If you're making your first visit to Lynnfield, do what many of the locals do – pick up some monkey bread from Karen's Bakery in the Center Court Shops, not far from the town common at the rear of 590 Main Street. Karen's was established in 1958, making it one of the longest-running businesses in all of Lynnfield. The monkey bread, a more recent addition, is sold at more than a dozen farm stands and shops throughout the North Shore. For those who have never tried monkey bread, it's a delicious treat – especially when served warm. The dough is mixed with cinnamon and other flavors and cooked in a way that allows bite-sized pieces to be easily pulled from the loaf. If you have leftover bread, even better – the Karen's Website suggests using …
