Wilmington Upends Top Seeded Lynnfield

LHS coach declined to call 2-1 loss an upset for #1 seeded hockey team.

The Lynnfield High School hockey team saw its playoff bid come up short this year with a 2-1 loss Friday to Wilmington. Lynnfield head coach Vin Mirasolo’s team was the higher seed entering MIAA Division 2 North tournament play on Friday, but the Pioneer coach wouldn’t go as far to classify the result as an upset. “We feel that this Wilmington team is as good as any team in the bracket, as good as any team in the division,” said Mirasolo. Pioneers Score Upset With 3-1 Victory Over Clippers

John Festa's hat trick proves to be the difference in toppling Cape Ann League leading Newburyport

This David and Goliath matchup was decided with a hat trick rather than a slingshot. John Festa’s three goals proved to be the difference as the heavily favored Newburyport Clippers fell to the Lynnfield Pioneers on Saturday in Peabody, 3-1. Festa Sets The Stage Festa’s first strike came unassisted just four minutes into the game, giving the Pioneers an early lead that held firm until junior Roy Cameron’s pass between the faceoff circles to sophomore Nathan Hickman left the Clippers an opportunity to tie up the score with 9:45 left in the third. But the Pioneers would strike back quickly, narrowly missing a goal off the post from senior Kelly Matthew less than a minute later, setting the stage for Festa’s second score of the day halfway …
