LETTER: Thank You For Supporting LHS Athletic Programs

On Sunday, students canvassed neighborhoods to help Lynnfield Athletic Association fund athletic scholarships and programs at LHS.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR In the midst of start to the spring  athletic season—Lynnfield High School’s student athletes took time out of their busy schedules to participate in one of our annual fund-raising events.  On Sunday, April 7 over 100 students canvassed Lynnfield’s neighborhoods on behalf of the Lynnfield Athletic Association (LAA) soliciting donations from residents in support of the athletic programs and scholarships at Lynnfield High School (LHS).  In addition to providing several scholarships every year to LHS seniors, LAA offers assistance with other important things like uniforms, transportation, trophies, and much more. Tag Day is a wonderful way for our students to participate in our fund-raising efforts, but perhaps more …

LETTER: Tag Day Was A Success

Send letters and local opinion pieces to william.laforme@patch.com.

To the Editor: On behalf of the Lynnfield Athletics Association, I would like to thank the residents of Lynnfield for their generosity on Tag Day (Sunday, October 14). Each year on Tag Day, all Lynnfield High School athletes from all seasons go door to door seeking donations from the Lynnfield community. This year’s Tag Day was a success, despite the wet weather. Donations will be used to benefit all LHS student-athletes. Nearly two-thirds of all LHS students are involved in LHS sports. The Lynnfield Athletics Association (LAA) is a booster group that provides financial support throughout the year for every team at Lynnfield High School. LAA purchases uniforms, equipment, trophies, and other basic items. LAA also sponsors scholarships and …

More Than 250 Runners Compete In Annual LAA 5K

Road race is a longstanding July 4th tradition in Lynnfield.

On Wednesday morning, more than 250 runners took part in the Lynnfield Athletic Association's annual 5k road race. The event helps raise funds for scholarships as well as the athletic programs at Lynnfield High School. This year, 21-year-old Sean Hanlon of Georgetown won the race, while Mark Hudson, 25, finished 5th to lead all runners from Lynnfield. A full list of those who finished, plus their times and home towns, can be viewed here on the Cool Running website. Interestingly, the 19th place finisher in the race, Tim Moss, listed Wollongong, Australia as his home town. All other participants were either from Massachusetts or New Hampshire. Lynnfield Athletic Association Faces Uncertain Future Without New Volunteers

Organization provides scholarships and athletic equipment to LHS students.

For several decades now, Lynnfield High School athletes have benefited considerably from the work of the Lynnfield Athletic Association in any given year. However, the LAA now finds itself among the handful of town organizations facing a questionable future without an infusion of new volunteer help. The LAA Road Race has been an annual July 4th tradition in Lynnfield for about 45 years - with about 25 of those years as an LAA event. Before that, it was organized by the former Lynnfield Couples Club. Proceeds from the race and other activities help fund six $1,000 scholarships that the LAA awards to graduating LHS seniors each year. "I feel it could (fold). Unless someone steps up, this is the last road race," said Linda Rugato, who …

Good morning Don - right now there's some question about whether the group will continue in the long term because they haven't found new volunteers in a while. They raise money for six LHS scholarships each year and then much of the rest apparently goes to pay for a very wide range of athletic supplies and other things for the LHS students.   more ›

Race Held In Memory of LHS Tri-Athlete, OD

OD's 8th-annual memorial run/walk was held Sunday to raise scholarship funds, remembering former LHS athlete Johnny O'Donnell.

About the walk, OD, and organizers OD may have only lived until age 19 from Jan. 12, 1984 to Dec. 4, 2003, but his legacy lives on through scholarships funds raised during this past weekend's 3.1-mile walk. "There's no special reason for the 25th," his aunt and the event's organizer, Karen Mahon, said. "It's a nice time of year for the event." A three-season athlete, OD was on the varisty wrestling team, the varsity football team, and the junior varsity baseball team at LHS. Since he visited the school from time to time after graduation, the walk began and ended at Lynnfield High School. All proceeds will benefit the John M. O'Donnell Memorial Scholarship Fund. A scholarship will go towards a student who writes an essay on overcoming life …
