Sen. Katherine Clark, who represented Lynnfield until last year, has announced to supporters that she will run for Congress.
In a letter emailed to her supporters on Friday afternoon, State Senator Katherine Clark announced that she will be running for Congress. Clark is a Melrose Democrat who represented Lynnfield until last year's redistricting changes took effect. U.S. Representative Ed Markey (D-Malden), who represents Stoneham in the House, is currently running for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by newly appointed Secretary of State John Kerry. If Markey wins that Senate seat, it would leave open the Fifth Congressional District seat in the House, which Clark would run for. If he loses his bid, he would retain his current House seat. Two other Massachusetts legislators have also announced their intentions to run for Markey's seat, if he wins the Senate seat: …

The following is a joint statement from State Senator Katherine Clark and State Reps. Paul Brodeur and Donald Wong: In December our communities were stunned when a Wakefield man was charged with 100 counts of child abuse and sexual assault involving very young children. This deeply disturbing case highlights the need to strengthen our laws and regulations to help prevent these horrific crimes in the future. Over the past month, we have been working with Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone, Wakefield Police Chief Rick Smith, and our colleagues in the legislature on a bill to strengthen the Commonwealth’s sex offender registry system, make more information available to the public, and promote communication among the state agencies …

The following is a letter to the residents of Lynnfield from State Sen. Katherine Clark: January brings the start of a new legislative session, and this week I will be sworn in for a new term representing the 5th Middlesex District. However, due to redistricting mandated each decade, this District no longer includes Lynnfield. The Town of Lynnfield will be ably represented by my colleague and friend Senator Tom McGee, and we will continue to work closely together on a number of priorities. Though I may not represent Lynnfield in the State Senate, I certainly will continue to hold your wonderful community close to my heart. I thank you for all you have taught me and for all that you do each and every day to build a stronger, safer and …

The following is an opinion piece from State Senator Katherine Clark: This is a question many of us are asking ourselves and our loved ones. Last Friday’s horror in Newtown, Connecticut stands in sharp contrast to the warm scenes of holiday joy and togetherness that permeate our communities and our homes at this time of year. The fact that this act of shocking violence occurred during the holidays, a time of such joy for so many children, adds to the heartbreak. At times of such devastating, national grief, it can be difficult to come together and enjoy the holidays without guilt or aching sadness. But that is what we must do. While we process our own confusion and anxiety and help our children do the same, we have another challenge …

The following is an opinion piece from State Sen. Katherine Clark: Many of us rely on our extended families to help care for our children. In our household, my children are blessed with the active involvement of both sets of grandparents in their daily lives – picking them up from school, sharing meals, helping with homework, and providing support and encouragement. My parents and my in-laws share a truly special relationship with my kids, and they are a vitally important piece of our family unit. But for many families in our communities, grandparents are doing even more: they are raising their grandchildren. They are responsible for feeding, housing, and educating their grandchildren and for keeping them healthy and safe. In other …

The following is an opinion piece from State Senator Katherine Clark: This month I am proud to be partnering with the Cradles to Crayons organization to provide new and gently used clothing and other essential items to children in need in Massachusetts. Cradles to Crayons is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing low-income and homeless children with the items they need to be safe, warm, and ready to learn. As winter approaches, community assistance is needed more than ever. Hundreds of thousands of children in Massachusetts are in need and too many face the winter months without a new, warm coat or go to school without the proper supplies and gear. In previous years, families across our communities have generously donated …

The following is from State Sen. Katherine Clark: Last week I joined Governor Patrick as he signed into law An Act Relative to Third Grade Reading Proficiency, which I sponsored in the Senate. The signing ceremony took place right here in our district at the Robin Hood Elementary School in Stoneham. It was a great event, and quite timely. Earlier this month, the 2012 district and school MCAS scores were released. The numbers reflected significant progress across the state, particularly in the upper grade levels, with 88 percent of 10th graders scoring proficient or above in English language arts (ELA) and 78 percent in mathematics. Those results, the highest in the history of the MCAS program, are something to be proud of and …

September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. In Massachusetts, ovarian cancer is the fourth leading cancer diagnosis for women with an incidence rate slightly above the national average. One fact stands out above the rest - early diagnosis is the key to successful treatment. The Massachusetts Ovarian Cancer Awareness Coalition, an organization of experts from Dana-Farber-Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center, the M. Patricia Cronin Foundation to Fight Ovarian Cancer, and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, has embarked on a public education campaign to increase awareness about the risk factors and early warning signs of ovarian cancer. According to the Coalition, approximately 15,500 women will die in the United States …
