Local Lawmakers Offer Sex Offender Registry Reform Bill

Three nearby state lawmakers - State Sen. Katherine Clark and state reps. Donald Wong and Paul Brodeur - offer proposed reforms in light of the John Burbine case.

The following is a joint statement from State Senator Katherine Clark and State Reps. Paul Brodeur and Donald Wong: In December our communities were stunned when a Wakefield man was charged with 100 counts of child abuse and sexual assault involving very young children.  This deeply disturbing case highlights the need to strengthen our laws and regulations to help prevent these horrific crimes in the future.    Over the past month, we have been working with Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone, Wakefield Police Chief Rick Smith, and our colleagues in the legislature on a bill to strengthen the Commonwealth’s sex offender registry system, make more information available to the public, and promote communication among the state agencies …

Local Legislators Voted for 'Three-Strikes' Bill for Violent Crimes

The bill both aims to ensure violent criminals stay behind bars while easing prison overcrowding by reducing drug-offense penalties.

A bill that toughens sentences for violent repeat-offenders passed the Senate last Thursday after having been overwhelmingly in the House Wednesday evening.  The so-called "three-strikes" law eliminates parole for someone convicted three times of a violent crime, with at least one conviction having carried a minimum three-year prison term. It passed the House with a vote of 139-14. In the Senate, it passed 31-7. The movement to pass the law was fueled, in part, by outrage over two crimes. In one, Woburn police officer Jack Maguire was murdered by a felon. In the other crime more associated with the law, sometimes dubbed "Melissa's Law," 27-year-old Jamaica Plain schoolteacher Melissa Gosule was murdered in 1999 after being raped and …

Local Reps. Back Unemployment Insurance Bill

Legislation aims to freeze a 31% hike in unemployment tax rate for businesses.

Led by House Minority Leader Bradley H. Jones, Jr. (R-North Reading) and Senate Minority Leader Bruce E. Tarr (R-Gloucester), Representative Donald H. Wong (R-Saugus) joined the entire House and Senate Republican caucus in filing legislation to freeze the anticipated unemployment insurance tax rate. Citing the current economic climate as the reason for this legislation, House and Senate Republicans seek to prevent a tax increase of $220 per employee, or 31%, on the Commonwealth’s businesses. This would mark the fourth straight year that a similar bill has been passed by the Legislature protecting Massachusetts employers from this damaging and unnecessary tax hike. “Implementing this rate freeze is the best and most concrete way we can help…
