The following is an announcement from the Lynnfield High School Key Club: This Halloween, instead of collecting candy, Lynnfield High School's Key Club will be asking for donations to UNICEF. All proceeds raised from Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF will go to The Eliminate Project: Kiwanis eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT). Any donations from Lynnfield residents will be greatly appreciated and will go to a worthy cause helping people around the world. Over the weekend, local nonprofit group BKP held its annual Halloween dance at the Elks Club in Wakefield, over on the town line with Lynnfield. Group members meet every month or so at the Centre Congregational Church in Lynnfield and ship boxes of donated children's books to the Philippines, where they are used to stock libraries in impoverished communities. Back in January, Patch did a profile piece that talks more about the group's work. Check it out here. In this photo, BKP members and their families are seen at Saturday's dance, which also featured food provided by Chef Jacky Robert of Petit Robert Bistro in Boston. The following was provided by the North Shore Selkies: The North Shore YMCA Selkies Synchronized Swim Team recently reached out to a former team of the Selkies’ Head Coach Carrie Reynolds. When the Selkies learned that the Synchro Stars, a Jamaican synchronized swim club, had a need for more costumes, the Selkies packaged up their old costumes to send along to the Jamaican team. The following was provided by nonprofit organization First Descents and by Amber Vaccaro of Lynnfield: Amber Vaccaro of Lynnfield has spent the last year of her life recovering from cancer. With the help of The Reading Athletic Club (RAC), she is running her first Half Marathon on December 2, 2012 in Las Vegas, to raise money for ‘First Descents’, an organization that provides outdoor adventure therapy to young adults with cancer. RAC Program Director, Lori Haverty has made a special investment in Vaccaro. By modifying exercises and providing encouragement Haverty has seen an amazing transformation within Vaccaro, not only physically, but mentally as well. Haverty says, “Amber is tough. The following was provided by the American Heart Association: The American Heart Association has honored Lynnfield residents, Bert and Brenda Carey, for their support and dedication to the organization. The Carey’s were recognized on Thursday, September 27 at the Heart Association’s 2012 Heart of Our Mission event at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Boston. On May 9th 2008, Bert was at a local men’s clothing store having a conversation with another customer and his son, when Bert suddenly passed out. The customers’ son had just completed a CPR course required at Newburyport High School and immediately began performing CPR on Bert. Five days later, Bert woke up in the hospital with no recollection of what had happened. He had stents put in …

The following was provided by Karen Mahon: The 9th annual OD’s memorial Run/Walk took place on Sunday, September 30th at Lynnfield High School. Despite the rainy conditions, over 200 people gathered at LHS to participate in this memorial event, either as runners, walkers or volunteers. Johnny “OD” was a graduate of Lynnfield High School’s class of 2003 and dedicated three sport athlete. Johnny passed away unexpectantly in December 2003. A number of Johnny’s former classmates, teachers, friends and family members joined in the event to honor his memory. Strong support was received by both the LHS cross country track and girl’s volleyball teams. The event also drew a number of Lynn and Lynnfield residents. Proceeds from this event ( over $4,…

Last Friday, students at Lynnfield High School got together to raise funds in memory of classmate Gianna Dias, who died in July at the age of 15. About 400 of the students wore pink "Fly High Gianna" t-shirts designed in her memory. Proceeds from the sale of the t-shirts go to the Angels Above Charitable Trust, which provides support to chronically ill children and their families at the Massachusetts General Hospital for Children.

Members of Team Tavilla share their story on how and why they've raised $40,000 for the third annual 5K brain tumor walk this Saturday, Oct. 13.
Brain tumors are oftentimes fatal, compared to other forms of cancer. Aiding in the fight against them, Team Tavilla has raised $40,000 so far for the National Brain Tumor Society's third annual walk, Saturday, Oct. 13, on DCR Mother's Rest at Carson Beach, in Boston. Registration begins at 8 a.m., while the program and activities lasts from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Participants can walk, run, jog, and push strollers or wheelchairs. Susan Tavilla, of Lynnfield, is teaming up with 60 people in honor of her mother, Ginny, 80, whose tumor unfortunately has recurred. Susan is the second oldest of eight. Ginny was diagnosed with Stage 4 Glioblastoma (the furthest stage) April 10, 2010, and despite a three-month life expectancy, is a living miracle …

These young Lynnfield residents - Sahil Patel, Ava Cook, Owen Doherty, Brennan Curley, John Burns, Genna Gioioso - are among those who have been helping the Friends of the Lynnfield Library get ready of their annual book sale. The annual fundraising event is this Saturday at the Old Meeting House from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Members of the Friends of the Library also have their own preview event on Friday evening.
Athletes from all of the Lynnfield High School sports will go door to door seeking donations to help Lynnfield Athletic Association keep up its work.

On Sunday, October 14, all Lynnfield High School athletes from all seasons will be going door to door seeking donations from the Lynnfield community. We ask for support to ensure that LAA can continue its work on behalf of all LHS athletics teams. Nearly two-thirds of all LHS students are involved in LHS sports. The Lynnfield Athletics Association (LAA) is a booster group that provides financial support throughout the year for every team at Lynnfield High School. LAA purchases uniforms, equipment, trophies, and other basic items. LAA also sponsors scholarships and athlete awards. LAA events also include the annual July Fourth Road Race.
