Where Is This?

Do You Know Where This Was Taken?

Each week, Lynnfield Patch runs a photo taken somewhere in town and invites readers to guess where it is.

"Knowing others is intelligence. Knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power. If you realize that you have enough, you are truly rich." - Lao Tzu. Clear your mind. Focus. And tell me - do you know where this was taken?

Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month

Got a letter to the editor or local opinion piece? Email william.laforme@patch.com.

The following was provided by the office of Rep. Brad Jones, Jr. October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Awareness Month. SCA claims one life every two minutes and each year, more than 250,000 deaths occur from SCA. I wanted to take a moment to share with you the symptoms and warning signs of SCA to better understand how to respond and prevent SCA from occurring. What is SCA? Cardiac arrest is the sudden loss of cardiac function, when the heart abruptly stops beating. When this happens, a person loses consciousness and their pulse and blood pressure will be absent. The most common cause of SCA is Ventricular fibrillation. This is when the normal electrical activation of the heart muscle contraction is replaced by a chaotic electrical …

Finnish Lessons

Thanks to Lynnfield School Superintendent Dr. Thomas Jefferson for providing this commentary piece to local media about his recent visit to observe schools in Finland and Sweden.

The following was provided to Lynnfield's local media by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Jefferson:  Finnish Lessons November 2012 As you may be aware, in recent years the global community has begun to pay a great deal of attention to public schools in Finland.  For the last decade that country has ranked at the top of international comparisons on measures such as the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). What is unique about Finland’s success is that they have done this in a country that does little standardized testing, appears to have significantly less homework than most Asian or high achieving American districts, and pays little attention to the ranking of schools or the evaluation of teachers.  Last month I had …

Considering the variety of people who went, I can assure you that Lynnfield didn't eat the trip. Some indirect contribution through taxes to the state for its contribution, I guess. If your supt actually learned anything useful which he will now apply, you got a good deal.   more ›

LETTER: Exciting Changes In Local Rehab And Long-Term Care

Send letters to the editor and local opinion pieces to william.laforme@patch.com.

Note: Christine Baldini is a Lynnfield resident and the administrator of Hathorne Hill.  She formerly was the administrator of Cedar Glen Care and Rehab Center in Danvers. As a Lynnfield resident and skilled nursing administrator for more than 10 years, it is exciting to see our area become the stage for a major transformation taking place in the rehab and long-term care professions. Here on the North Shore, outdated nursing homes are being replaced with innovative centers that focus on getting patients back home and back to their routines.  These facilities are an important part of the health care continuum and play a vital role in reducing unnecessary hospital readmissions, providing intensive rehabilitation by trained therapists, so …

Follow Up: This Appears To Be The Movie Filmed In Lynnfield

On Sunday, Lynnfield Patch ran a question from a reader asking about a movie scene he remembers being shot in town some decades ago. We got some very helpful responses.

It looks like it took hardly any time at all to find out the answer to a question that came in last week - was there a movie a couple of decades ago that had a couple of scenes shot in Lynnfield? A quick search online came up dry, but fortunately, a handful of locals weighed in and pointed us in the right direction. Of the readers who confirmed that they also remembered some filming taking place in Lynnfield around the early the 1990s, one of them, Reid Lavoie, thought that it might have been the 1989 film "Race For Glory," which is reportedly about two guys preparing for a major international motorcycle race. It turns out that there's an excellent chance Reid is right on the money. There is a Yahoo Movies page for "Race For Glory" which …

Matthew Maglio I was a police officer on Detail on many of the shooting scenes, Pentad's was used as a bus stop with the artificial rain laid down by the FD. Another scene was shot at the DPW yard where it leads to the Middle School field was used as an entrance to the race track. The cemetery off of Forest Hill Ave was used for a burial scene. The most interesting: We shut down Main St.and …   more ›

Then And Now

Then And Now: Gowing Tavern

Each week, Lynnfield Patch runs a photo from the files of the Lynnfield Historical Society and talks about what's there today.

It might not look like it, but the Gowing Tavern was probably one of the most historic structures in the town of Lynnfield. That's because back in April, 1775, this is the spot where Lynnfield's Minutemen met before marching off toward Lexington and Concord. The Lynnfield Minutemen arrived in Arlington and participated in some particularly bloody fighting at the Battle of Menotomy. I was able to go into the story fairly in depth in this article from back in April about Lynnfield's role in the American Revolution. The article also noted that Joseph Gowing, proprietor of the tavern during that era, was a former leader of the Minuteman group that was commanded by Captain Nathaniel Bancroft during the opening days of the American Revolution. …

Grandparents as Parents

Send local opinion pieces and letters to the editor to william.laforme@patch.com.

The following is an opinion piece from State Sen. Katherine Clark: Many of us rely on our extended families to help care for our children.  In our household, my children are blessed with the active involvement of both sets of grandparents in their daily lives – picking them up from school, sharing meals, helping with homework, and providing support and encouragement.  My parents and my in-laws share a truly special relationship with my kids, and they are a vitally important piece of our family unit.  But for many families in our communities, grandparents are doing even more: they are raising their grandchildren.  They are responsible for feeding, housing, and educating their grandchildren and for keeping them healthy and safe.  In other …

Do You Know Where This Was Taken?

Most weekends, Lynnfield Patch runs a photo taken somewhere in town and invites readers to guess where it's from.

First off, I need to go out and find some new photos to add to the "Where Is This?" lineup. This one's about as bland as it gets. But that said - this is a fairly well known spot in town, whether you recognize it immediately or not. Do you know what this gate leads to in Lynnfield? Post your answer in the comments box below!

eBay Report

eBay Report: 'Grooviest' Is A Word You Can't Just Throw Around

From time to time, Lynnfield Patch takes a look at items up for sale online that are connected to the town's past.

"Won't You Take Me To..."  In 1977, the disco era had come full swing to Lynnfield. Even the guy on the LHS year book cover was sporting a blue jump-suit thing. I think I’ve seen some of my favorite musicians wearing similar get-ups in videos from that era. The jumpsuit even sports a big Pioneer Pride-style “L” on the front. I wonder what that would get online. The whole image feels like Elvis in Vegas, Jesus Christ Superstar, Dan Tanna, Frampton Comes Alive, and the Carter Administration all rolled into one product of a very specific and unique era. It’s so perfectly illustrated for the benefit of future decades that it wouldn’t surprise me if alien time travelers were behind the whole thing. So, in the space of just a year the LHS …

UPDATED: Did You Feel Tuesday's Earthquake?

Early Tuesday evening, a 4.6 magnitude earthquake struck near Hollis Center, Maine and was felt throughout the Boston area.

On Tuesday evening, people all over the Boston area felt a 4.6 magnitude earthquake that was recorded in southern Maine, near the town of Hollis Center. The epicenter was about 13 miles inland from the coast. Earthquakes are fairly uncommon in New England, but they aren't unheard of. This page on the U.S. Geological Survey website notes that there are nearly 400 years of recorded earthquakes in the Boston area. Personally, I remember another moderate earthquake briefly rattling the North Shore one day back around 2000 or so, and until Tuesday night, that was pretty much my only experience with earthquakes. So did you feel the earthquake in your neighborhood on Tuesday night? UPDATE, 9 p.m. - The US Geological Survey has downgraded the …
