Scout to Create Nature Markers at Partridge Island Boardwalk

Mike Welter, a 17 year old Life Scout, is in the process of placing nature markers along Partridge Island Boardwalk in Reedy Meadow as the final part of his Eagle Scout training.

Lynnfield High student Mike Welter has landed on the for his community-based project, the final piece involved in his Eagle Scout preparations. Welter will be placing 4x4 numbered posts and making brochures that will guide visitors with explanations of the flora and fauna surrounding them as they stroll the boardwalk.

“The brochure will have a brief description on the visual appearance of the plants and wildlife, where they are located, and what their eating and hunting habits are,” detailed Welter.

The reason behind Welter's Eagle Scout project is to attract more people to Reedy Meadow, a place Welter thinks is under-valued.

“I hope it encourages more of the public to visit the boardwalk and Partridge Island. I want people to realize it's there and appreciate it,” explained Welter.

This last sentiment comes as no surprise as Welter has been an outdoorsman and Boy Scout for the past seven years. Welter is also on the Lynnfield High Swim Team and rounds out his athletics with basketball on the side.

When asked what he enjoys so much about Scouts, Welter said, “Boy Scouts is really active, we try to have a trip every month, like a ski trip to Canada or a biking trip to Martha's vineyard. It has also taught me a lot about leadership and teamwork.”

After High School and completing his Eagle Scout project, Welter, a junior, is setting his sights on college.

“Although I'm still searching for a major, I'm thinking about business or engineering. My top choice for school is UMass Amherst where my sister, Lauren, goes for business,” Welter said.

This tenacious Scout plans to have his project completed by the end of August. Welter will make his brochures available at the library for anybody interested in learning more about Reedy Meadow and what kind of plants and animals inhabit the Partridge Island Boardwalk.
