VIDEO: Pioneers Beat Hornets in Final Game Showdown

Lynnfield knocks off North Reading in final regular season game, 5-2; both teams prep for tourney.

The final game of the regular season was more than a meeting of two rivals, it was a warm-up for the playoffs for both the North Reading Hornets and the Lynnfield Pioneers.

The tournament-bound foes met Thursday night at , where the home Lynnfield team honored its seniors and their families before the Pioneers (9-7-5) went on to a 5-2 victory over the Hornets (10-9-1).

Lynnfield Head Coach Vin Mirasolo said it was a big game for his club, which will enter the tournament as a lower seed.

"I think at this time of year seed is secondary," Mirasolo said. "What's most important is how you're playing, how you're feeling as a team. And I think we're feeling really good about our game."

Hornets Head Coach John Giuliotti said his team came out of the gate a little slow after a week-long layoff.

"Hat's off to them, they worked really hard, and we've just got to come right back at it in practice," Giuliotti said.

Five Lynnfield players scored, starting with Tyler Smith's first period goal. 

Lynnfield went on top 2-0 on a goal by Alex Ganter before North Reading cut the lead to 2-1 on Jeremy Buckley's goal.

Then in the third period Lynnfield got goals from John Festa, Greg Meininger and Dylan Costa, before North Reading's Thomas Potter got one back to end it at 5-2.

MIAA tournament seeding will be announced Friday.
