Triton defeats Lynnfield 57-55 in last home game

LHS falls in close contest on Senior Night

The boys’ varsity basketball team played their last home game of the 2010-2011 season on Tuesday night.  During a pre-game ceremony on senior night, three LHS players gave flowers to their parents.  Co-captain Connor Dario, Joe Sartorelli, and Patrick Yee were the graduating seniors who participated in the pre-game festivities.

The visiting Triton Regional High School Vikings were able to defeat an enthusiastic Lynnfield squad 57-55.

The first quarter was a frenetic 8 minutes of hoops action.  Connor Dario scored the first basket of the game on a layup.  The Vikings played a 2-3 zone and the Pioneers countered with a man to man defense with an occasional full court press.  Lynnfield sophomore Edward Moore scored a 3 pointer from the wing to cut Triton’s lead to 11-9.

Vikings junior center John Manning scored all of his 10 points in the first quarter.  Manning’s inside play kept Triton in the game early on.  The score was tied at 17 after Pioneer sophomore Patrick Kearney made 2 free throws.  Sartorelli made a reverse layup in the closing seconds of the quarter to tie the game at 19.

Pioneers Took Lead In Second

At the start of the second quarter LHS switched to a 2-3 zone defense.  This strategy proved to be effective since the Pioneers were able to create a turnover.  Kearney connected on a rainbow 3 pointer to give the Pioneers a 22-19 lead.  Gradually, the Pioneers increased their lead.  After Yee converted on a layup, Triton Head Coach Ryan Souliotis called a time out with 5:17 remaining in the second quarter.  At halftime LHS led Triton 36-34.

The Vikings battled back to regain the lead in the second half.  They outscored the Pioneers by 8 points in the 3rd quarter.  Heading into the 4th quarter Triton maintained a 50-44 lead.

Looking For Next Victory

LHS did not give up despite the momentum shift in the game.  Carangelo lead the Pioneers in the 4th quarter, scoring 5 of his 21 points in the final period.  LHS converted on 12 of 18 free throw attempts and they also made 5 three pointers.  Triton was able to hold off LHS in large part because of the strong guard play of senior Darren Lewis.

The Pioneers final three games of the regular season will be away games.  Next up for LHS will be a rematch against the Hamilton/Wenham Generals who defeated the Pioneers in mid December.

Lynnfield is eager to get another win.  “I’d like to get another win before the end of the year,” said Pioneer Head Coach Scott MacKenzie.
