The Past Week In Lynnfield Sports

A look back at recent LHS sports action.

The Lynnfield girls tennis team had a 2-0 record this week after a 5-0 win over Rockport on Tuesday and a tightly contested 3-2 victory over Peabody on Thursday.

Tori Copelas had a marathon match in the win against Peabody as her deciding point took three hours to finish. The second singles player scored a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Julia Brodding twister her ankle in a match and had to concede a point to Peabody, making Copelas’ long victory all the more important for the team.

“Tori has had a history over the past years of coming up with big wins at crunch time, we like to call it ‘Tori Time,’” said head coach Craig Stone.

Copelas and the doubles team of Karen Kelter and Jordan Miller all competed in the North Sectional Tournament and won their first round matches, but went down in the second round.

Boys Tennis in Need of Wins

The Lynnfield High boys tennis team has to go 5-1 in its last six games to qualify for the tournament after losing its lone match of the week 5-0 to Newburyport.

James Hook played a solid match, according to head coach John Harrison. Hook fell to Newburyport first singles player Matt Mogren 2-6, 6-7 (7-9).

"James played absolutely terrific,” said Harrison. “He almost forced a third set against a very strong first singles player. James was able to adapt to play his opponent a little more conservatively by limiting his errors and forcing his opponent to really work."

Boys Lacrosse Splits A Pair of Games

The three-headed monster of AJ Roberto, Niko DiCesare Travis Panzini accounted for 12 goals in Lynnfield’s 15-3 victory over Cambridge to get the week off on the right foot.

Roberto was his usual self with five goals, DiCesare scored four and Panzini finished it off with three goals.

The team wasn’t so fortunate as it go doubled up 18-9 against Newburyport to finish off a 1-1 week. Head coach Joe Papagni said that his team was playing “catch-up lacrosse” the entire afternoon. Lynnfield made the game interesting twice by cutting the lead to one goal before four penalties allowed Newburyport to capitalize on the man-up situation.

“Playing catch-up the entire game took a lot out of us but they didn't give up,” Papagni told Patch.  “They kept battling back until unfortunately penalties got the better of us and the Clippers broke the game open.”

Lynnfield is in a tie for first place in the league with a crucial week that Papagni said will “determine our fate.”
