LHS Girls Take Division 4 East Championship

Athletes from both the boys and girls track team distinguished themselves in Friday's meet.

While most of this year’s spring sports season has been rainy, damp, and chilly, the sudden hot weather did not impede the Lynnfield Pioneers Track and Field team’s performance at the Division Four Eastern Division Championships. North Reading High School hosted the event, which track team members from over fifty schools attended. Lynnfield demonstrated its athletic strength all throughout Friday afternoon and evening.

Lynnfield Girls Division Champs

The Lynnfield Girls Track team had many powerful performances throughout the meet on their way to the championship. Junior Scout Benson took second place in the 100 meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 15.70 seconds, an even stronger performance than her time in the preliminaries which was 16.13. Benson took fourth place in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 67.16 seconds. Lynnfield girls Senior Gretta Hunt and Senior Justina Padovani also placed in the top ten in this event, Hunt right behind Benson in fifth place (68.01) and Padovani in eighth (68.34).

Lynnfield Boys Place in the Top

Overall for the boys team, three athletes finished in the top four, meaning they qualify for the all-state track meet, which takes place next week.  Senior Steven Knox was one of these three, taking first place in the discus event with a throw of 141-0. He outperformed second place Christian Lavoie who had a throw of 131-01. Knox also placed second in the shot put at 50-6.

Additionally David Ernest, another senior, placed second in the Pole Vault with a jump of 12-0. Sophomore DJ DeGeorge came up with a fourth place finish in the shot put, at 48-0.

Other strong performances came from Sophomore Steve Carangelo and Sophomore Andrew Drinkwater. Carangelo finished the 200 meter in 23.9 seconds wile Drinkwater had a strong one mile race, coming in at 4:56.

“Overall I think it was a great season for the boys track team,” Coach William Wallace said. Despite a losing record for the season, Wallace said that the team performed better than usual in many meets throughout the season.

While next year the team will lose some strong senior athletes, there are many returning athletes with a lot of promise and Wallace hopes to recruit new talent. “With our showing in state meet yesterday, I believe we showed that we can be competitive with many of the other schools in our divisions.” Currently the team is looking forward to the state track meet, which will be held at Bridgewater State.

Overall the Pioneers came out in full force to compete in Friday’s meet. They looked strong throughout all the events, and while both the boys’ and the girls’ teams are losing seniors this year, the younger athletes on the teams provided a hint of what’s to come next year, and it looks as though they will be a team to contend with.
