Lynnfield Sports Roundup: Boys Lax Picks Up League Win

A rundown of last week's games at Lynnfield High.

It was a light week for the Lynnfield boys lacrosse team with only one game, and it came away with a Cape Ann League victory over Triton, 8-4, on Friday afternoon.

Joe Papagni was very happy to see his team come out on top with a much needed league win even with the schedule being very sparse this week.

“It is nice after a week lay-off to play well enough to win a league game,” Papagni said in an email to Patch.

AJ Roberto, the usual suspect when it comes to scoring goals for Lynnfield, was hurting with flu-like symptoms and only finished with one goal. But Blake Strader picked up the scoring slack with three of his own, while Matt Kelly pocketed two goals and dished out two as well.

Papagni also said that the man-down penalty-killing unit got some good work in this week, as the special teams unit killed off six, one-minute penalties to hold off Triton. Nick Critch saved nine shots and also got an assist.

Girls Lacrosse

Hamilton-Wenham 12, Lynnfield 11 (2OT):  Trailing 10-6 midway through the second half, the lady Pioneers battled back to tie Hamilton-Wenham 11-11 with under 30 seconds to play in the game.  After two scoreless regulation overtime periods, the Pioneers fell 12-11 in double-overtime to the Generals.

Goalie Lauren White made 20 saves on 32 shots-on-goal.  Amy Look led the offense with five goals and Jenny Schelzi was strong in the midfield controlling four ground balls to lead the team.

Wilmington 17, Lynnfield 10: A disappointing loss for the Pioneers who exhibited great effort throughout the game, but couldn’t get the breaks they needed when it mattered in order to keep the game close. Alex Prach scored three goals and was strong off the draw as well.  Amy Look led the team in both ground balls and forced turnovers with four apiece and Devon MacEachern scored five goals to pace the offensive attack.  The Pioneers record now stands at 3-8 on the season.

Boys Tennis

The Lynnfield boys tennis team is kind of at a crossroads right now in its season. With a 1-2 showing this week, Lynnfield needs a strong finish over the next few weeks to become eligible for postseason play.

“We need to go 5-2 the rest of the season to make the tournament, a possible achievement since we match up well against many of the remaining opponents,” head coach John Harrison told Patch.

Nick Romano and Kevin Carr got big singles wins in a 4-1 victory over Amesbury to start the week. But the remaining two matches didn’t fair so well, as Lynnfield didn’t win a point against Pentucket or North Andover.

“Right now our focus is on Newburyport on Monday,” said Harrison. “We only have two games this week, which will give us more time to practice and get ready for the stretch run.”

Girls Tennis

It was a 1-1 week for the Lynnfield girls tennis team. Lynnfield blanked Amesbury, 5-0, in their Monday match. Tori Copelas, Ava Grava and Molly McCarthy all got singles victories in straight sets. In the doubles matches, Karen Kelter and Gabriella Pena won first doubles, while Jess Fagan and Meaghan Rondeau took second doubles in straight sets.

The second match of the week didn’t come as a surprise for head coach Craig Stone. Swampscott and Lynnfield have played to a 3-2 score in every match dating back three years.

This time, however, Lynnfield was on the losing end with Julia Broding and Ava Grava grabbing the only team points.
