Thanksgiving Week Fundraisers Becoming Tradition At Town Elementary Schools

Summer Street and Huckleberry Hill held annual walking events Wednesday.

Students at Lynnfield's two elementary schools walked their hallways right before their Thanksgiving break to help raise funds for character-building programs and new technology.

At Summer Street on Wednesday, the school's PTO was on its way toward meeting a fundraising goal of $18,000 with the Race For Education. The event typically has the students walking laps around the school for a specified period of time, but poor weather kept it limited to the hallways this year.

The funds will be used to help fund character-building programs that do things like bring authors to speak to the students about issues like bullying.

The fundraiser has been going on at Summer Street for four years now - and individuals who would like to make a donation can do so online at this link.

At Huckleberry Hill Elementary School, PTO Co-President Amy Nardone, who helped organize the Walk-A-Thon at that school with Kerri Anne Allain, reported that funds raised from that event will help pay for new technology upgrades as needed.

Now in its third year, the Huckleberry Hill Walk-A-Thon was expected to raise about $15,000. Nardone also reported that physical education teacher Mrs. Robertson would be donating an extra half hour of gym class for the coming month to the class that raises the most money. At Huckleberry, a number of parents, some of them in costumes and manning tables to hand out things like silly bandz to the kids, were also on hand to help provide a festive atmosphere.

"It's about raising money, but it's also about school spirit, making kids responsible for their school," said Nardone.
