Students Exceed State Average In Most MCAS Categories

Lynnfield students exceeded the state average in the 2013 MCAS testing, with complete results now available on the state website.

Lynnfield exceeded the state average for “proficient or higher” in all subjects and grades tested. For example, 94% of 3rd graders tested proficient or higher in math, compared to 66% of students statewide. 8th Graders were 66% proficient or higher in math, compared to 55% statewide.

Combined, Lynnfield students in all grades were 90% proficient or higher in language arts, compared to 69%. All grades in Lynnfield achieved 74% proficient or higher, compared to 53% statewide.

Lynnfield students also tended to be far below the state average in the warning/failing category – 11% of grade 7 math students came in under warning/failing, compared to 21% statewide for example.

Several categories were almost identical to the state average in the “needs improvement” category. The highest figure was 39% of Lynnfield 8th grade students needing improvement in the science/tech category, compared to 43% statewide. Eighth grade math, at 25% needs improvement, was identical to the state average, while grade six math was within a point, 23-24%. For all grades in Lynnfield, 24% of students need improvement in science/tech, compared to 35% statewide. For math, that combined figure was 15%, and for English, 8%.
