North Reading To Join Peabody/LHS Girls Hockey

Lynnfield joined co-op with Peabody last year.

One year after Lynnfield girls became eligible to play hockey in Peabody, athletes from North Reading are now to set to further broaden the co-op program's talent pool.

At Tuesday night's school committee meeting, members took a moment to vote their support for adding North Reading to the current Peabody/Lynnfield girls hockey co-op.

The hockey co-op was approved last spring, building on an existing Peabody girls hockey program that had not won a game in over a year at the time. The program did earn at least one victory in its latest season and tied in another, according to a Boston.com season scoreboard.

Also at Tuesday night's school committee meeting, Timothy Doyle reported that the next step in the high school expansion project will be to retain a designer for the building, which could happen by mid-July.

Members received a budget update from Thomas Geary indicating that the district will finish its year in the black, although there have been challenges such as a phasing out of some No Child Left Behind grants.

During his presentation on the Lynnfield Business Coalition's annual job shadowing day with local high school students, Wally McKenzie noted that the organization is also still selling its Christmas ornaments to raise money for local scholarships. Marking his final meeting as superintendent of Lynnfield Schools, Robert Hassett noted that LHS Guidance Coordinator Mike Moresco had recently been honored by Salem State University as an outstanding counselor of the year, and that Michael Dillon had received a scholarship from the Agganis Foundation.

Finally, Hassett also said that LHS Science Department Chair Scott Gordon had secured a $3,000 Coloring Communities Orange grant from Corning. This will result in the school receiving some new lab products late in the summer.
