LHS Students Observe Wellness Days

Wellness included presentation on skin cancer from local dermatologist.

The following is an announcement from Lynnfield High School:

During the week of April 10-12, the students at Lynnfield High School participated in a series of interesting and informative presentations and activities on important health related topics that focused on facilitating positive student responses to healthy living and providing students with techniques/strategies for managing stress at school and home. Students were introduced to yoga, fun physical/fitness activities including a walking challenge, strategies for managing stress, taste tests of smoothies and healthy choices for snacks. Raffles for beach ball stress balls, pedometers and a free breakfast were awarded to students for their participation. The Wellness Days program was coordinated by the LHS school nurse along with several faculty, the food service team, student and community volunteers.

Dr Joseph Kvedar returned for his third visit to Lynnfield High School on April 11 as part of the Wellness Days.  Dr. Kvedar is a board-certified dermatologist with Partners Health Care and Associate Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School. Dr Kvedar provided an informative and interactive presentation to the sophomore class on the importance of taking care of the largest organ in the body, the SKIN; as well as the risks of melanoma and other damaging skin conditions from exposure to the harmful effects of the sun and indoor tanning beds. Students were given educational information and tips for protecting their skin from the damaging effects of the sun and encouraged to sign the NO Tanning Pledge for junior prom next year. The Melanoma Foundation generously donated the popular derma scan box for several days, providing staff and students an opportunity for individual analysis of the face and hands for damage from sun exposure.
