LETTER: Susie Cleary Running for Second Term on Lynnfield School Committee

Candidate for re-election spent seven years as a middle school teacher.

The following is a candidate statement from Susie Cleary, who is running for a second term on the Lynnfield School Committee in the April 8th town election:

I am Susie Cleary and I am running for my second term on the Lynnfield School Committee.  I have children in the 5th and 6th grades at Lynnfield Middle School and a 3rd grader at Summer Street School.  My background is as an educator, having taught for seven years at the middle school level.

What I have learned during my first term has been invaluable. I have seen firsthand the dedication and long hours of so many in our town: administrators, teachers and parents alike.  We are all committed to creating and maintaining a premium educational environment for our children. Together as a community, we are constantly faced with the challenge of remaining fiscally responsible while trying to achieve this goal.  It is the job of the district to find that right balance and to constantly work to provide the teachers with the necessary tools and training needed to do the job well.

We must continue our efforts to attract, maintain and develop the best teaching talent possible.  Once we secure quality teachers, a strong Professional Development program is critical.  The teachers in Lynnfield are passionate people who want to do their jobs well even as those jobs get more and more challenging with increasing demands.  Creating time for collaboration and professional conversation benefits our entire staff, ultimately resulting in more effective connections in the classroom.  By providing such support we, as a district, are reinforcing our high expectations for both the teachers and the students.

In the 21st  century, the need to be technologically literate has never been more critical.  Technology has become more and more pervasive in our lives and it will only continue to do so.  It is our responsibility to embrace this and work with our students to ensure they have the communication, collaboration, and global skills they will need to be successful. Technology must be seamlessly integrated into the educational process in order to properly prepare our children for their future. The 1 to1 Ipad initiative is an essential step in the right direction.

I have learned that the Lynnfield Public Schools is a strong organization filled with people striving to create positive relationships across all levels.  Successful educational environments are created when capable, enthusiastic teachers, equipped with the right tools, are reinforced by parents as educational partners and supported by a leadership team that sets high standards and offers consistent communications. I will continue working diligently to help create and support this process.
