10 Things You Need to Know Today: Dec. 1

It's a very busy Saturday in Framingham this first day of December. It's Framingham Patch's second birthday and there are so many holiday events we did a few more than 5 things today!

Our daily column, 5 Things You Need to Know Today, will help you to get your day started and offer you some fodder for water cooler conversation.

1. Happy Birthday to Framingham Patch!

It was 2 years ago on Dec. 1. 2010 that we launched Framingham Patch. Today, we have published more than 6,000 articles, have 1,766 fans on Framingham Patch Facebook and 899 Twitter followers.

We'd love to be at 2,000 Facebook fans and 1,000 Twitter followers by the end of 2012. Please tell your friends and family all about us!

We have thousands of newsletters subscribers and you wouldn't believe how many people from Framingham (and MetroWest) visit our site each month. We truly appreciate the support!

In the comments, feel free to tell us your favorite thing about Framingham Patch. And feel free to tell us what you would like to see on the site, too.

2. Friends and family are holding a Birthday Friendraiser Walk for Kris Burke and her family. She is a mom of a Barbieri Elementary student and a former Brophy Elementary School teacher. Since 2001, Burke has been battling breast cancer and now metastatic cancer. The two-hour event begins at 10 a.m. and features a short walk, birthday party games, and of course birthday cake. Attendees are encouraged wear their favorite and most creative hat to make the walk even more festive!

3. Holiday shopping? Stop by the 5th Annual Holiday Marketplace at Framingham High from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The marketplace is sponsored by the high school's Parent Athletic Council and all monies are donated directly to student athletes and athletic programs at the high school.

4. Today more than 40 artists will open their studios to display and sell works from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Fountain Street Studios in South Framingham. In addition to original works of art, such as painting, photography, fabric art, prints, and handcrafted jewelry, visitors will enjoy musical performances, portrait demonstrations and book signings. Participants range from emerging to internationally recognized artists. Admission is free.

5. Saxonville is celebrating Jingle Bell Day today from noon to 5 p.m. but from 1 to 3 p.m. families can catch a horse-drawn hay ride through the village. Then spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the many facets of the Saxonville Experience. Consider bringing a toy contribution or non-perishable food item for one of our local charities.  After the hayride, when the wagon returns to the Pinefield Shopping Center, take a stroll through the entire village and find a wealth of activities, great bargains and fantastic promotions. For the younger strollers there will be arts and crafts, storytelling, pictures with Santa, fun food and refreshments, and a chance to meet Mrs. Claus. For the more demanding strollers there will be wine tasting, concerts, performances, fine art for viewing and purchasing, great shopping at special prices and outstanding food to taste and savor along the way. Click here for more details.

6. Also as part of Jingle Bell Day in Saxonville, Edwards Church is hosting at Alternative Gift Fair in Edwards Hall. The Church is located near Stapleton Elementary School. For information on what will be at the fair, click here.

7. Saxonville Studios, located in the Roxbury Carpet Mill building, is holding its 23rd Annual Open Studios today from noon to 5 p.m. More than a dozen artists. For additional information see the attached flyer.

9. At Shoppers World today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  the Massachusetts State Police troopers will be at Toys 'R Us for the Massachusetts State Police third annual "Fill the Cruiser" event for the United States Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program.

10. Tonight, Jack's Abby Brewing is hosting a tour and tasting at its facility from 7 to 9 to benefit the Framingham Public Library Foundation. Tickets are $30 and are available at the main Framingham Library, the McAuliffe Library branch and at the door. No credit cards accepted.
