Redistricting Would Mean New State Senator For Lynnfield

Donald Wong would also no longer represent Lynnfield precinct.

The Massachusetts Legislature has released its proposed 2012 redistricting plan, and it contains a couple of significant changes for Lynnfield.

Under the current districting plan, State Rep. Donald Wong, a Saugus Republican, represents one Lynnfield precinct, while fellow Republican Brad Jones Jr., the House Minority Leader, represents the rest of the town.

Under the proposed district setup for 2012, Lynnfield would be represented entirely by Jones as part of the 20th Middlesex District - which would also include about half of Reading and half of Middleton, and all of North Reading.

“The unveiling of the Massachusetts House and Senate redistricting maps represents a milestone in the redistricting effort and comes after a very lengthy process," said Jones in a statement after the proposed maps were released, adding that he looks "forward to the public comment phase of this project and a continued conversation amongst legislators before the maps become finalized."

State Senate

After just one term with freshman State Senator Katherine Clark, a Melrose Democrat, Lynnfield is also apparently set to get a new office-holder in this category. Clark's revised 4th Middlesex district would now consist of Reading, Wakefield, Stoneham, Melrose and Malden. Lynnfield would then become part of the third essex district, which, with Saugus, Lynn, Swampscott and Marblehead, is represented by State Senator Thomas McGee, a Lynn Democrat.

Voter Comments Sought

The legislative redistricting committee that announced these proposed changes on Wednesday is accepting comments from the public for about the next week and then will vote on the plan and send it along to the full legislature for its approval.
