Food Stamp Cut Hits Just Ahead of Holidays

Nearly half a million Bay State families will get a lower amount of food assistance as benefits from the federal stimulus expire.

Food stamp benefits have been cut to their pre-financial crisis levels just as the holiday season begins.

Food pantries across the state are bracing for increased demand now that the federal food program will be giving an average family of four $36 less each month.

The 2009 stimulus designed to shore up the economy included increases in monthly food stamp allotments. That stimulus bump expired on Nov. 1.
