Ballot, Legislative Efforts Underway to Repeal State Tech. Tax

State Republican Leaders announced over the weekend that they’re unveiling legislation aimed at the technology tax – a priority they recently stopped in Wakefield to talk about. 

House Minority Leader Brad Jones and State Senator Minority Leader Bruce Tarr will reportedly hold a press conference on Monday aimed at repealing the 6.25% tax on custom software and network design services.

The tax was included in the Governor’s budget earlier this year and has been unpopular with business owners because of its complexity and potential impact on innovation in one of the state’s key industries. 

The repeal effort apparently has some bipartisan support, and Jones also reported in a separate announcement last week that Attorney General Martha Coakley had certified a ballot initiative that also aims to repeal the tax.
