OLA Student Honored For Quick Thinking During Fire

Third-grader Sabatino Rossetti kept his cool and helped his parents put out an oven fire.

Accomplishment: Sabatino was recently presented with a Young Hero Award by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services. Back in November, he spotted flames coming from the oven while helping his mother with Thanksgiving dinner. He immediately called for his mother and brought a fire extinguisher from the garage, which he gave to his father, who then put out the fire.

The Young Hero Award is given to young people who respond appropriately during emergency situations.

Attending the event at the Wakefield Fire Department were Wakefield Fire Chief Michael Sullivan, Chief Tom Bogart, DFS spokeswoman Jennifer Mieth, and other firefighters, family and friends.

In Lynnfield, children in grades 1-4 are taught fire prevention by town firefighters under the S.A.F.E. program. "Sabatino demonstrated composure and smart thinking that ultimately led to the best outcome possible," said Bogart, adding that "simply put, the S.A.F.E. programs work."
