Peter's Organic Garden Blog-Number 2, August 5, 2011

Peter updates the vegetables that are being harvested and describes the types of heirloom tomatoes that he has growing.

 

We are now harvesting eggplants, tomatoes and have the newly harvested garlic available for sale. We have tied it up in bunches of three heads.

First, a word about garlic. If you have never tasted fresh garlic you are missing a treat. My friends and work colleagues rave about it.  Of course, my garlic like all my vegetables is grown organically: without pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers. This garlic was planted last October and set out roots over the winter. In the spring it sprouts green tops and continues to grow under the ground until it matures in late July when the tops die back. Once harvested, it will last at least three months if stored correctly.

We harvest our eggplant and squash while it is small and tender. I focus on the Asian eggplant which is slender and delicate.

I grow mostly heirloom tomatoes. This year I have planted Brandywine, Rose, Cherokee Purple, Prudens Purple, Black Prince, and Black Krim. Both the Black Prince and Black Krim are Russian heirlooms. I also grow a Sweet Chelsea cherry tomato from Japan.
