LYSC and Lahey Health Talk About Concussion Safety

Head's Up! LYSC and Lahey Health Lynnfield Discuss Concussions With Coaches

Last week, Lynnfield Youth Soccer Club (LYSC) held it's Coaches' Meeting for the Spring 2013 season for all of it's travel teams (U10 and above).  One of the key topics of discussion was concussion safety and protocols for young athletes.

Concussion saftey and identification has been in the news quite a bit over the past several years with some major stories involving some high profile athletes battling Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy.  As a result of this and continuing studies of concussions and their effects, US Youth Soccer as well as the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) have adopted changes to their policies specifically put in place to help coaches protect young players that may have been subject to a concussion and LYSC have extended those policies to its players.

LYSC reviewed these changes with the coaches and Dr. Douglas Fritz from Lahey Health was on hand to help coaches understand what a concussion really is and how to help identify a possible concussion.  Children that have had a concussion need a physician's note to return to play and should follow a post-concussion protocol to get integrated back into full play.  Doctors at Lahey Health in Lynnfield are happy to help patients with any questions about concussion safety or help diagnose or treat patients that may have had a concussion.

US Youth Soccer and the US Center for Disease Control have also paired up to offer many resources to coaches, players, parents and physicians on concussions.  The "Heads Up" campaign even has a free online training center for coaches.

There will be a meeting for all U6 & U8 coaches this Saturday (3/30) at the Summer Street School at 9a where Dr. Fritz will be addressing the coaches of the league's younger age groups.
