The following is an announcement from “Team Jammin’ Joey” for the upcoming Cystic Fibrosis walk in Lynnfield on Sunday, May 20:

Please join our local 7th grade Lynnfield Middle School student, Joey Distefano for the Greatstrides 5 mile Walk to cure Cystic Fibrosis here in Lynnfield on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Town Common.

Cystic Fibrosis is a life-threatening inherited disease which affects the lungs, sinus, liver and digestive system, clogging them with thick, sticky mucus. People with CF suffer from chronic and often fatal lung infections. Joey was diagnosed with the CF when he was 2 months old and is currently taking over 20 different medications to help him battle the disease. This walk is intended to raise funds for research and to fund drug development to bring an end to this devastating disease.

Finding new medicines to fight CF and ultimately a cure is the driving force behind the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. To achieve this goal, they aggressively invest in drug development research with the most successful and innovative biotech companies and scientists in the world.

Exciting news: Kalydeco™ received approval from the FDA on January 31, 2012 for people with CF ages 6 and older with the G551D mutation of CF.  The drug is the first to address the underlying cause of CF.  The success of this and other new drugs depends on the support of generous donors.  Please support Joey by registering here
