No matter what time of year it is though, the North Shore has some other great independently-owned options when it comes to distinctive chocolate treats that won't break the bank.

The Chocolate Truffle will continue to maintain its locations in Reading and Winchester after the Lynnfield location closes.

When it comes to North Shore candy shops, perhaps none are as iconic as the Putnam Pantry in Danvers. The building was once the home of Revolutionary War hero General Israel Putnam and many generations of locals have enjoyed its legendary make your own sundae bar. However, Putnam Pantry is also home to a variety of chocolate products, both regular and sugar-free, and overall, it's a pretty reasonably priced business.

Another storied purveyor of chocolate on the North Shore is in Salem, which dates back to 1806 and which is apparently the oldest candy shop in America. This store boasts a handful of colonial-era favorites as well as a wide variety of chocolate products.

Speaking of Salem, one of many great reasons to enjoy a walk around that city's downtown is a stop at Maria's Sweet Somethings, which sells delicious ice cream as well as a wide selection of fine truffles and other chocolate products.

Lynnfield residents looking for Easter candy or just to satisfy a sweet tooth may also want to have a look at Russo's on Main Street in Saugus.
