Severe Thunderstorms Possible Through 10 p.m.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Monday afternoon, saying severe thunderstorms are possible in Lynnfield.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Lynnfield, plus much of eastern Massachusetts for Monday afternoon.

The National Weather Service in Taunton issued the “watch” at 2:35 p.m. on Monday, saying that conditions are favorable for formation of severe thunderstorms through 10 p.m.

Severe thunderstorms can produce damaging wind, dangerous lightning, heavy rain and hail.

The severe thunderstorm watch comes after the weather service issued a hazardous weather outlook on Monday morning saying that strong or possibly severe thunderstorms containing damaging winds and large hail are most likely to occur between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Monday.

Already in western Massachusetts, some storms containing hail were reported in Amherst, Longmeadow, Springfield and Wilbraham, among other locations. Golf ball size hail was reported in Ludlow just after 2 p.m.

The heavy rain in western Massachusetts has forced drivers on the Massachusetts Turnpike to lower speeds to about 15 miles per hour, according to State Police.
