Photo: A Symbol For The Ages

This iconic symbol of the town is a fitting image for Independence Day.

Today's photo of the day needs no introduction to most town residents. It's the bell on the Lynnfield Common that was cast in 1918 and which was once used as a fire alarm at the top of the Meeting House. It sits on a .

It's also somewhat reminiscent of the Liberty Bell, one of the nation's most enduring symbols of our freedoms.

As we celebrate freedom and the birth of our nation on this day, it brings to mind one of my favorite quotes, which was written by future President John Adams soon after the Declaration of Independence was signed - although at the time he was talking about July 2, 1776.

Yet through all the gloom I can see the rays of ravishing light and glory. I can see that the end is more than worth all the means."
