UPDATED: Latest Forecast Includes Some Thundersnow

Storm heading toward region expected to create a wintry mess just in time for Halloween with a small amount of snow locally. However, Monday night doesn't look too bad for trick or treating.

This was updated at 11:10 a.m. on Saturday.

The latest National Weather Service forecast is calling for only about one or two inches to fall in the Lynnfield area, but residents can still expect a wintry mess between later today and early Sunday.

In response to the forecast, the town has announced a snow emergency for the town beginning at 8 p.m., which means that on-street parking will not be permitted at that point.

Also, residents are reminded it is illegal to plow or blow snow onto roadways, and they are also advised to avoid unnecessary driving tonight. The emergency will be in effect until further notice. Residents should also bear in mind that this storm will bring the strong possibility of downed trees and wires, so they should plan accordingly.

The approaching weather system has triggered several alerts for various times this weekend - a coastal flood warning, a high wind warning, and a winter weather advisory.

For this part of the state, the NWS predicts rain starting after 2 p.m., switching to a mix of rain and snow at some point this evening. By about 4 a.m., the precipitation is expected to be all snow.

This particular storm may also feature "thundersnow," a somewhat uncommon weather phenomenon that basically mixes a thunderstorm with a snowstorm.

Only about one or two inches are now predicted for Lynnfield, although further West, some areas could get as much as a foot of snow. Residents will also likely wake up to foggy conditions Sunday morning as the snow winds down.

The sky is expected to clear up Sunday, but there could still be wind gusts as high as 47 mph, and on Sunday night, a low temperature of 26 degrees is possible.

This weather is likely to put a considerable damper on weekend Halloween festivities in Salem. However, Monday night's trick or treating may not be impacted much at all, outside of a below average temperature for the season. No precipitation is called for Monday, with a daytime high of 49 and a nighttime low of 35.

Note: Do you think the town will get more or less snow this winter than last? .
