Five Things You Need To Know: May 5

Cinco de Mayo celebrations at the library and at the Fat Cactus. Just be careful not to mix them up.

Today is Thursday, May 5. Here are five things you need to know:

Fiesta Time: It's Cinco de Mayo, and the library is having a celebration at 3:45 p.m. featuring stories, a craft, songs in Spanish, and refreshments. For the grown-ups, the Fat Cactus on Route 1 happens to be having its own Cinco de Mayo celebration.

For those who were wondering, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican victory at the Battle of Puebla over a French invasion force on May 5, 1862. For more, check out the holiday's Wikipedia listing.

World Of Music At LMS: The is holding its spring concert tonight at 7 p.m., with a "World of Music" theme. This reflects the foreign language activities the students have been participating in throughout the week.

Book Lovers: The Book Lovers group meets at the tonight from 6:30-7:30 p.m. This month's book selection is "At Home: A Short History of Private Life," by Bill Bryson. For more information call 781-334-5411.

LHS Pioneer Sports: At 3:45 p.m., the varsity and junior varsity baseball teams both have home games against Newburyport. The varsity and junior varsity softball teams also have 3:45 p.m. home games, against Manchester Essex Regional High School. Also, the girls varsity lacrosse team has a home game against Wilmington, while the junior varsity team plays at 5:30 p.m.

Historical Commission Awards: During the Geraniumfest celebration on May 14, the Lynnfield Historical Commission will have an open house. The commission will also present three awards at that time – the Spirit of Lynnfield Award (to an individual or organization who has helped maintain the town's spirit), the Perkins Reservation Award (to a homeowner or organization who has preserved an early structure as closely as possible) and the Donald Harris Initiative Award, which honors one who has taken the initiative to help preserve the town's history.
