Today is Thursday, March 8. Here are five things you need to know.

LHS In The Theater Semifinals: The Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild holds its semifinals this weekend, and several dozen high schools, including Lynnfield High School, are participating. The Lynnfielders are one of seven teams competing this Saturday, March 10 at Weston High School. They go on at 12:15 p.m. and are expected to perform “The Cinderella Waltz.”

BKP Book Shipment: If you’re interested in getting involved with local nonprofit group BKP (or donating some books to young people in the Philippines), stop by the basement this Saturday, March 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., where members of the group will be packing up their latest overseas shipment to libraries in impoverished areas of the Philippines. You can also find out more about the group by emailing bkp@bkpinc.org. The group’s name, Bagong Kulturang Pinoy, translates to “New Filipino Culture.”

Oil Painting Demo: The next meeting of the Lynnfield Art Guild is Thursday, March 15 at 7 p.m. at the . Westford-based artist Kathy Cooper will give an oil painting demonstration.

Music In Our Schools: Next Tuesday, the Lynnfield Public Schools music departments present the annual Music In Our Schools Month concert at 6:30 p.m. at the LHS gym. The concert features choral performance groups from grades 4 through 12, plus bands in grades 6 through 12.

Afternoon Discovery: Do you have kids with an interest in science and technology? Next Thursday, March 15, the Lynnfield Library has its next meeting of the Afternoon Discovery group. The group is aimed toward middle school-aged students. This month’s topic will focus on how heavy boats stay afloat – and the kids will be making their own boats from foil and other materials.
