Five Things You Need To Know: Jan. 13

Coming up this month - Lynnfield Community Schools presents "Willy Wonka Kids." Also - do you have some children's books you can donate, or are you perhaps looking for a new volunteer opportunity?

Today is Friday, January 13. Here are five things you need to know:

Willy Wonka Kids: Later this month, Lynnfield Community Schools presents “Willy Wonka Kids,” based on the Roald Dahl classic “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Performances are at Lynnfield High School on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children and seniors. Tickets are available an hour before each show and also on Tuesday, Jan. 17 in the LHS foyer from 5 to 6 p.m.

Volunteer/Donation Opportunity: This Saturday, Jan. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., members of will be at , preparing their latest batch of donated books to be sent overseas to help stock Filipino libraries. The group accepts donations of books from young readers through high school. Call 781-334-5637 for more information.

Trash Pickup: Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. day – and trash collection will be delayed next week by one day. This applies to all trash routes in town and residents are still asked to have their trash on the curb by 7 a.m. Call 781-334-9500 with any questions.

Town Recycling Center: Tomorrow, Jan. 14, is the last day the town recycling center will be open to accept Christmas tree disposals. The center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and residents must have a valid recycling sticker.

LHS Sports: Today on the LHS sports schedule, the coed JV track team has a meet in Ipswich at 3:30 p.m. Otherwise, the school’s basketball teams are playing Masco. The boys JV game is at home at 5 p.m. against that school, while the girls JV team plays at the same time at Masco. At 6:30 p.m., the varsity teams play their respective games, with the boys at home and the girls at Masco. 

Bonus: It’s Friday the 13th – a day that has garnered more than its share of folklore over the years and inspired at least a few really bad slasher movies. Here is an interesting look at the history of Friday the 13th in various cultures around the world.
