Today is Thursday, August 9. Here are five things you need to know.

Skype With Children’s Author: On Wednesday, August 15 at 2:30 p.m., the Lynnfield Library has its first-ever virtual author visit with Deb Lund, author of "Dinosauring" and other children's books. The kids will read some of her books together and think of some questions to ask Lund beforehand. Registration required. Call Laura or Pam at 781-334-5411 to sign up.

Road Scholars: Michele Ellicks from the MassDOT/RMV will be at the senior center on Thursday, August 16 at 12:30 p.m. to discuss issues facing older drivers, rules of the road, warning signs of unsafe driving, new laws and recent changes that have taken place at the RMV. She will also discuss what driving alternatives are available in your community. Free. Please sign up at the front desk. Lunch is at 11:30 for $2.00/$3.00. You must sign up for lunch at the front desk by 12 noon the day before. Please sign up for lunch and the lecture separately.

2014 Celebration: The Lynnfield Historical Society is selling the distinctive “Old Meeting House” variety of hosta plant to raise some early funds for the town’s 300th anniversary celebration in 2014.  The plants have purple flowers and are $25 each. .

Town Business: Some upcoming town government meetings include: Selectmen on Monday, August 13 at 7 p.m. at town hall, the conservation commission on Tuesday, August 14 at town hall at 7 p.m., and the school committee in their new meeting place in the selectmen’s room at town hall on Tuesday, August 28 at 7 p.m.

Golf Tournament: The David K. Johnson Foundation will holds its 12th annual DKJ Foundation Golf Tournament this Monday, August 20 at the Black Swan Country Club in Georgetown. The event raises funds in the fight against Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, and some proceeds will benefit the Sanborn Place in Reading and Wakefield.
