Discover Treasures: All About Consignment

The Patch Passport shows you where you can find trinkets in your town. Get out and explore the unique local shops and all they have to offer.

In this tough economy, consignment shops may be the way to go.

Rose Gallagher, 66, of Reading, and her husband, Ed, 79, have been the "retired" shop owners of All About Consignment since April 2009, which was previously vacant.

All About Consignment, at 480 Broadway, sells women's casual, dress, and evening-wear and accessories, including jewelry, shoes, handbags -- all at a discounted price, especially for name brands.

It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

"Items have to be clean and wearable from a non-smoking home. If they sell within 60 days, or a month after that, the donor will get 50 percent of the profits," Gallagher said.

As far as the pricing, a scale method works. Used items are sold at one-third of the retail price, and new selections are available at half or three-quarters of the original price. For example, a new women's suit, which cost $158, the Gallaghers would sell for $75.

She noted she often does comparision shopping in order to help scale prices.

"We sell mostly designer brand names, but if clothes from Walmart or Kohl's are in excellent condition, they have the option to be sold."

Items that are not consigned are often given to charities, such as Goodwill or The Salvation Army.

Prior to working here, the Gallaghers worked at an antique furniture store in Reading.
