OK, so we all hear that martial arts is good for self esteem, so what does that mean? Drawing a great picture and posting on the fridge is good for self esteem as well. HOWEVER..... (you knew that was coming), martial arts training has a great positive influence on self esteem and self image and more importantly self worth.  I believe that students earn self respect by being in an instructional environment where effort leads to success.  The more effort you put forth, the more you will achieve.    For example, the harder you try for that next rank, the more it will become a reality.  At Cervizzi's we do not just hand out a belt after so much time, the student MUST earn it, whether it takes 2 months or 2 years.  There is no self esteem gained when things are handed to the individual. There is defined goals and each step leads toward a specific goal, whether it be to master a new technique or do more push ups.  The students gets excited and knows they have accomplished a goal.  That does more for a child than buying a gift.  This scenario keeps happening in our structured martial arts program and after months of training, their esteem and self worth skyrockets.  The instructors build them up for success.  I have personally witnessed a shy child turn in to a confident  and polite adolescent.  Those with high self esteem are more likely to succeed in school and other sports. If you have any questions or comments, I would Love to hear them, I can be contacted at cervizzis@aol.com - Janice
