Peabody Eatery Now Open on Sundays for Breakfast, Brunch

Kismet Kafe, which specializes in popovers, quiche, soups and sandwiches, is on Central Street in Peabody.

Kismet Kafe has expanded its hours to Sunday with a full breakfast menu and a baked egg special.

Danvers residents Aldonna and Mario Linares and their son, Corey, opened the breakfast and lunch restaurant in May 2013.

Aldonna has been around restaurants her whole life as her father was the chef at the Town Lyne House for decades and owned the Daniel Fuller House on Route 114 in Middleton at the current location of Maggie’s Farm.

Her father passed away at the age of 96 last year, but his investment helped the couple open Kismet Kafe.

Aldonnna said she chose the Peabody location after seeing the location and all of its contents were for sale. The family went into it “full steam ahead” and gave the location a facelift – complete with a new lunch counter, said Aldonna.

Kismet Kafe’s specialty is an item that is often desired, but not usually offered in restaurants any longer – popovers.

“You need that little niche. I said, ‘nobody has a good popover,’” said Aldonna, whose popover recipe came from her father.

But Kismet Kafe doesn’t stop at just popovers -- they also get creative with them.

On Sundays, Kismet Kafe offers baked eggs in popovers and each week has a different specialty. Last week, they offered baked eggs in popovers with an Italian theme. This coming weekend it will have a Cuban flair.

Aldonna said she gets many of her ideas working as a part-time chef instructor at Eurostoves in Beverly -- and is always testing out new offerings.

Other specialties at Kismet Kafe are quiche, soups and panini. Many customers enjoy the Atomic Café Coffee offerings and that breakfast is served all day.

Nearly everything at the Central Street location is homemade, including the fish and clam chowder that Aldonna said will be a regular Friday offering during Lent.

“I pride myself that everything is homemade,” she said, adding that there are always vegetarian items on the menu as well as gluten-free offerings.

In addition to the three family members, Corey’s girlfriend also works at the restaurant and they recently hired a fifth person who will work Sundays.

Running a small business means long hours, but it’s a labor of love for the family – and the small business is getting noticed. Aldonna said she has been encouraged by the support on Facebook and got a positive review on Yelp.

Kismet Kate, located at 47 Central St., in Peabody, is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday as well as Tuesdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Wednesdays through Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
