Library Summer Reading Kickoff To Feature Award-Winning Performers

Bring the kids by Saturday to sign up for summer reading and for stories and songs.

Note: This was provided by the Lynnfield Public Library.

The Lynnfield Library will present Parents’ Choice Award winning performers Davis Bates and Roger Tincknell in a program of stories and songs to help kick-off and celebrate their annual summer reading program.

Entitled Under One Sky: A Multi-Cultural Celebration, the performance will involve the audience, through song and story, in a variety of cultural traditions. Hear how the bear missed the train, how coyote got his howl, and how foam got to be in the ocean, and be prepared to sing, move and dance, especially to the closing song, Woody Guthrie’s This Land is Your Land.

The songs and stories are accompanied by the Aztec rainstick, Inca
flute, Russian balalaika, African drum, as well as guitar, mandolin, and
the North American banjo.  There will even be a short lesson in how to
play the spoons, and a visit from a dancing wooden dog.

Davis Bates and Roger Tincknell have over six decades of combined
experience performing for families, in community settings throughout the
Northeast, and are known both for their warm and participatory performing
style.

Pete Seeger has called Davis "thoughtful, creative, human, and a
fantastic storyteller."  His traditional style of telling is a refreshing
change from video’s and passive televised entertainment, empowering and
encouraging audiences of all ages to join in the fun, and to take the
stories home with them to share with others.  His storytelling cassette,
Family Stories, won a Parents Choice Gold Award, and was recently named on
of the years’ best audio recording by Booklist magazine.
