Children's Author Visits Lynnfield Elementary Students

Maine author Lynn Plourde discussed reading, writing at Huckleberry Hill and Summer Street schools this week.

Lynnfield's elementary school students had the opportunity to have some fun and build up their writing skills this week with children's author Lynn Plourde, a Maine resident who has had 24 books published.

Plourde has spoken at numerous schools around the country, traveling to destinations like Georgia and Indiana – although much of this work is in Maine, where she lives in a small town outside of Augusta. In fact, Plourde told children at that she had gotten up at 4 a.m. Monday morning to drive down for her presentation. On Tuesday, Plourde gave a similar presentation to students at .

At Huckleberry Hill, Plourde addressed a gathering of kindergartners, 1st graders and 2nd graders, with the latter two groups breaking up into smaller groups later in the day to work on their writing skills with her.

The author recalled how she had been writing books for 13 years before anyone agreed to publish one – and that she had been writing even when she as young as the elementary school children in her audience. "I always have to work at being a better author," she told the gathering.

At the school, Plourde read aloud from  her books "Dino-Pets" and "Grand Pappy Snippy Snappers" with an overhead projection screen allowing the children to enjoy the illustrations as well.

Later, she selected some children (as well as a teacher) to act out her book "Pigs in the Mud in The Middle of the Rud." For the uninitiated, "rud" is a local Maine slang term (or pronunciation) for "road."

Looking ahead, Plourde will release a follow up to "Dino-Pets" this summer, called "Dino-Pets Go To School."
