The Lynnfield Art Guild is pleased to continue its monthly artist demonstrations open to the public with well known acrylic artist Maris Platais of Carlisle next Thursday October 20th at 7 p.m. at the Lynnfield Senior Center, 525 Salem Street.

Platais is well known both here and abroad for his exquisite acrylics on canvas, pen & inks and limited edition etchings of New England landscapes and boats. Many of his fine works depict Kenebec, Maine and the magnificent trees that surround his studio. He paints in every season on location, but the blazing colors of his autumn scenes are special treasures.

Maris Platais was born in Latvia and has lived in New England since 1949. As a boy in war-torn Europe, Platais spent many an hour drawing with pen and ink.  As there were none of today’s toys (a simple rubber ball was a luxury item during those years), children had to entertain themselves, so Maris began drawing and sketching! He came to the states at age 13, knowing little English.

After high school he went on to graduate from Tufts and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston where he later became a member of the faculty.  He lectures and demonstrates to artassociations throughout the Northeast and is a member of The Guild of Boston Artists where he has had many one-man shows. He has received several awards for excellence in the Mystic International Competition, the Top 100 Competition,Arts for the Parks, Jackson Hole, Wyoming and is a two-time winner of the Honors Award in Graphics from The Academic Artists Association in Springfield,Mass. One highlight of his career was winning The Artist in Wilderness Program Grant, which allowed him to paint in the Colorado Rockies in 2009. The American Society of Marine Painters has awarded him membership and he is past Presidentof The Concord Art Association, Concord, Mass.
