One good thing about bulk mail is that unlike its distant cousin, the telemarketer, it can’t wake you up or interrupt your dinner. But that said, it does have a way of clogging up your mailbox in any given week with lots of paper and not necessarily much else of interest. So what can you do about unwanted bulk mailings? A call last week to the Lynnfield Post Office confirms that there is indeed a “Do Not Mail” list to go along with the “Do Not Call” list. The Federal Trade Commission has a page with various links for people to use, depending on what kind of mail they wish to stop receiving. …

Tomorrow night, town residents will have the chance to hear from their candidates for local office at the annual Lynnfield Business Coalition candidate night. The forum is at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Lynnfield High School auditorium. According to a couple of emails received this week however, it appears that not every voter in town is aware that there are two contested selectman's races this year. Usually there's only one. For the regular three-year term on the Lynnfield Board of Selectmen, Tom Terranova is challenging incumbent Bob MacKendrick. The other selectman's race this year is for a one…
Over the weekend, a reader noted that the Lynnfield Fire Department had been out at Pillings Pond Saturday morning with some equipment. A quick email to the Chief Joseph Lingel found that nobody was ever in any danger - it turned out that department members were doing an ice rescue drill. According to Chief Lingel, personnel use equipment such as an inflatable boat, an ice rescue sled, ice rescue suits and the fire department tower to simulate the rescue of a person who's fallen through the ice. Training on this equipment reportedly takes place each year.
As noted during the town's recent budget process and also in last week's live chat on Lynnfield Patch, the police department is expecting to add two new officers to the force next spring when the Market Street at Lynnfield project is getting ready to open. The department also expects to have its first full-time detective in place before then. So, that invites the question - what kind of staffing or equipment needs does the fire department expect to deal with when the new development is open for business? This week, Lynnfield Patch checked in with Fire Chief Tom Bogart to learn more. According…
The committee spearheading the development of Lynnfield's fields complex is forming several subcommittees that town residents can get involved with. At their meeting on Thursday night, fields committee members announced the creation of three subcommittees that interested citizens can inquire about joining. One subcommittee would work on assessment, design and construction details of the project, assisting a consultant who will eventually be hired by the town to oversee these areas. For example, subcommittee members may help to document the use of the current town fields and to talk to the …
The site work that many Lynnfield residents have noticed at the site of the future Market Street development will continue for about four more months, with building foundations expected to start appearing in the fall. Appearing at Monday night's selectmen's meeting, Ted Tye, managing partner of National Development, reported that workers are clearing and leveling the site and preparing to build the berm that will be located near Walnut Street. "The next four months will be very heavy site work," said Tye, noting that work will also begin on the site's utilities and loop road. The first stage…
Earlier this week at town meeting, one topic that came up for discussion at one point was the town's unfunded pension obligations - which currently amount to about $18 million. Lynnfield's non-school personnel (school personnel are part of the state system) contribute to the Essex Regional Retirement System (ERRS), which oversees pensions for 19 towns and numerous other entities in Massachusetts. On Monday night, Gustus, with help from ERRS Executive Director (and Lynnfield town meeting voter) Joe Maney, explained that a funding schedule is now in place that calls for fully funding the system…
The town’s median home sale price is down over the past year, according to new data from the Warren Group. The real estate information company reported that as of the end of March, the year to date median sale price for Lynnfield was $398,000 – a 30.8% drop from the $575,500 recorded at this point in 2011. For March 2012, the median sale price for Lynnfield was also reportedly $398,000 – while last March, that figure stood at $570,000. The Warren Group reported that for March of 2011 and 2012, there were seven home sales in Lynnfield. For the year to date point at the end of March 2012, there…

Earlier this month, I received an email from a reader who was inquiring if I have a dog, given my regular photographic forays into the woods of Lynnfield. She also suggested that it would be nice to put a list together of good dog walking spots in Lynnfield - and I agree. After all, some of this website's readers are relative newcomers to Lynnfield or they come from surrounding towns and might not know the ins and outs of these places. The email was very astute, since I have had a dog named Goose since November, and he has indeed come on a few walks in Lynnfield's open spaces. Goose is a one-…
Visitors to the recently renovated Partridge Island boardwalk may have noticed in recent months that there are now numbers mounted on signposts that go along the walkway. But what do they mean? A year or two ago, Eagle Scout Mike Welter of Troop 48 did a service project that allows walkers to learn more about the plant and animal life in and around Reedy Meadow. As somebody once said in a great film, "Fall gave winter a miss and went straight into spring." With that in mind, here's a look at what those numbered signposts are all about just in case you happen to find yourself out walking on …
Thanks to a scarcity of snow this winter, the town Department of Public Works can report a surplus of $1,016 for the current year -even after replenishing the road salt supply. Of course, this also assumes that we don't get a repeat of that April Fool's Day blizzard from years ago. According to DPW Director Dennis Roy, this is the first time in his 30-year career that he can recall the town having a surplus in its snow removal budget. While the winter snow was missed in many quarters (and not so much in others), the unseasonably warm weather couldn't have been better timed from the …
Early in the year, this website ran an article on an emerging effort underway in town to find a home for a new local access TV studio and to upgrade existing services. Since then, I've been curious about where the current Lynnfield Cable Access facility is. It turned out I've probably walked past it a dozen times in the past year when attending various events at Lynnfield High School - and there may also be a chance that students of past decades once spent their detention time in the stuffy little window-less space. I finally tracked down the Lynnfield Cable Access studio after a recent …
Prospective candidates for town office had until early last week to submit their paperwork - and now that all the petition signatures are counted, it looks like there will be several contested races this year. With that, here is a look at the candidates that will be in the 2012 Lynnfield town election: - For the open selectman seat being vacated by Arthur Bourque, Tom Terranova and Dave Nelson are running.- For the town assessor position being vacated by Dave Nelson, Harry LeCours and Donald Garrity are running.- For the two school committee seats being vacated by Michael Craffey and Tim Doyle…
