For the latest Whiz Kids of the Week, this group of 5th graders at the Lynnfield Middle School will be among those competing at the Destination Imagination world championships in Knoxville, Tenessee, from May 25 to 29.  Teams of Lynnfield 8th and 9th graders are also reportedly heading to the big competition. Elaine Gravante, leader of the 5th grade team, reports that members are "beyond excited" to be headed to Knoxville after advancing earlier this year in local competitions. Each year, tens of thousands of students across the country participate in Destination Imagination (DI) competitions, which help young people build crucial skills like teamwork and problem solving. This group of fourth graders from Lynnfield came in second at the recent DI regionals in Beverly and earlier this month, they competed in the state finals – which is a particularly impressive accomplishment considering their status as a first-year team. This week's Whiz Kid of the Week feature highlights four local students who were chosen to participate in the Massachusetts Music Educators Association's Northeastern District Junior Music Festival. Congratulations to Amy Sokolow, Annie Dillon, Janna Sokolow and Melanie Richard. More than 400 students from 95 schools across the state were chosen out of some 900 students to participate. The Lynnfield students, who come from both the middle school and the high school, performed with the District Girls Chorus on Saturday, March 19 at Lowell High School.
Ten-year-old Nick D'Amico is a member of the Shawnee Peak Race Team in Bridgton, Maine. Coming off an excellent ski season, his scores have qualified him for the Maine Alpine Racing Association (MARA) team, which will represent the state this Saturday, March 19 at the Piche Eastern Finals at Gunstock in Gilford, NH. At this weekend's event, Nick is expecting to compete against kids from nine other states. To get to this point, he had to rank in the top six out of about 60 other skiers. On February 5th, Nick took a gold medal at the Mountain Dew Vertical Challenge at Shawnee Peak, joining …
Congratulations to Lynnfield Middle School students Lucas Pascucci and Juhi Saxena for their great performances in the school spelling bee earlier this week. Pascucci, an eighth grader, won Monday's spelling bee, while Saxena, the runner up, is a seventh grader. About 30 students in grades five through eight participated in the spelling bee, which was coordinated by Mrs. Piccinni, who teaches seventh grade English. According to an announcement from LMS, Lucas will now go on to represent the school in the Lynn Daily Item's annual regional spelling bee at  Breed Middle School in Lynn on Friday…
This week's Whiz Kid of the week feature will actually focus on a group of young Lynnfield residents - specifically, the members of Daisy Troop 85036 at Huckleberry Hill School. Recently, the girls, who are five and six years old, put together a package for Brienne Travers, who is currently a patient at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The package for the wounded soldier contained get well cards, pictures, notes and girl scout cookies. Name: Sabatino Rossetti School: Our Lady of the Assumption, Lynnfield – 3rd grade Accomplishment: Sabatino was recently presented with a Young Hero Award by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services. Back in November, he spotted flames coming from the oven while helping his mother with Thanksgiving dinner. He immediately called for his mother and brought a fire extinguisher from the garage, which he gave to his father, who then put out the fire. Name: Alexa McCormick   Age:  13 School: Lynnfield Middle School Accomplishment: In late January, Alexa competed at the Bay State Games in Williamstown, placing fifth of nine in the preliminary test track. Alexa has been skating since she was in the 4th grade and has been a competitive skater for almost as long. She devotes five days a week to her sport: three of them with coach Amy Hanson Kuleszka, another day for her own individual practice, and the other with her training coach.
